EDUCATION IS KEY TO TACKLING HEAD LICE
EDUCATION on
head lice could play a vital role in reducing the amount of head
lice outbreaks among primary school - children, according to the
makers of market - leading head lice brand Full Marks.
SSL International, manufacturers of Full Marks, claim that education
on head lice is key to managing outbreaks in the classroom. They
have produced a range of downloadable free education material
available from
www.headlice.co.uk to help give
teachers and schools essential information for managing head lice
infections during school term.
A recent survey carried out by Full Marks revealed that this common
ailment is leading to children having days off school, with 1 in 5
parents having kept their kids at home because of head lice
infections. This means the average child has not attended school for
at least 1 day per term due to head lice. 43% of parents also
didn’t have a clue what the difference was between head lice (the
parasite) and nits (the empty eggs shell), leading to problems for
parents detecting and treating head lice correctly.
Caroline Green, brand manager for SSL’s range of head lice products,
said:- “Education on head lice is key to the appropriate
control of infections. Head lice are passed through close
head-to-head contact and outbreaks are often common at school, due
to the way children play and interact. Although the primary
responsibility for the detection and treatment of head lice lies
with the parent/guardian, teachers can provide an essential role in
assisting both children and their parents with a greater
understanding of this very common and easily treatable problem.”
Educational material listed on the website includes essential facts
on how head lice are caught, along with a downloadable letter to
parents and a downloadable head lice newsletter, giving schools
options for communicating about head lice to parents. The site
also advises teachers about whether or not children should be sent
home from school and features downloadable worksheets for infants
and juniors to learn about head lice to help remove the stigma
associated with this everyday problem.
