Big Apple trip for putting Liverpool First!

3 PEOPLE are set for the trip of a lifetime, after designing a whole new image for the organisation charged with improving life in Liverpool.  Liverpool First asked local people to create a new logo, slogan and an image/picture which best represents the city.  More then 200 entries were received, and the 3 winners have scooped tickets to New York on the new flyglobespan flight from Liverpool John Lennon airport to JFK.

The winning logo, designed to encapsulate what Liverpool means to local people, was designed by Don Moss, from West Derby, who will now see his logo brought to life by a local design company.

Mr Moss says his winning entry was achieved through trial and error:- “I just had a play around with the computer, to see what I could come up with. I was a bit shocked when I heard I had won and I can’t wait to visit the Big Apple!”

Steve Ellison, from Aigburth, who designed the winning slogan:- ‘Liverpool first and foremost’, said: “I never usually enter competitions, but I saw this one and thought it looked interesting so decided to have a go.”

The winning picture, of a rainbow over the Liverpool waterfront, was designed by Helen Brennan, who works in the city. She decided to enter the picture she had already taken as she felt it encapsulated what Liverpool means to her. She is looking forward to her trip:- “I have 2 young boys, so we are hoping to go to New York later in the year to get all our Christmas shopping.”

Liverpool First strives to drive up the quality of public services in the city and improve opportunities and life chances for local people. It is responsible for developing plans to improve education, health, housing and employment prospects and aims to make Liverpool a safer place to live and work.

Liverpool First Director Carol Perry said:- “We are delighted with the results of the competition. We now have an exciting new logo, a great slogan and a wonderful image that represent just how great Liverpool is.   We received some great efforts, and would like to thank everyone who took part in the competition. Congratulations to our three winners.”

3 runners up were awarded mobile phones donated by retail chain Boots, and digital cameras supplied by John Lewis.

2007 – a good year for North West retailers?

POSITIVE signs about the retail economy in the North West are beginning to emerge from Britain’s retailers according to research by Barclaycard Business. The research has found that 31% of North West retailers are optimistic that the retail economy will improve in 2007. However, opinions are divided with a similar percentage (29%) predicting that the economy will get worse for retailers over the coming 12 months.

The research comes from the 1st Barclaycard Business Retail in Detail Survey; an annual survey of more than 1,000 retailers across the country. The aim of this new survey is to build a comprehensive picture of the nation’s high street and to gauge the views of retail owners in the UK today.

The research found that North West retailers identified a number of key changes needed to improve the health of the retail economy in 2007: of those questioned in the survey 39% voted for lower business taxes and the same again voted for lower interest rates to kick-start the retail economy. However, compared to the national average of 31%, only 23% believed that lower oil prices would have a positive effect on the nation’s high street economy.

Bill Thomson, Commercial Director, Acquiring from Barclaycard Business commented on the results:- "Given the tough year on the high street the findings show an encouraging optimism that 2007 will be a better year for the business sector in the North West.  Whilst some North West retailers are unsure of the prospects for the retail economy in 2007 many make clear that lower business taxes and lower interest rates are what’s needed to kick-start Britain’s retail economy.”

The survey revealed the regions most optimistic about the retail economy in 2007. The North East and the South West are the most optimistic regions (36%) with the East Midlands the least optimistic (24%).

The regions most optimistic about the retail economy in 2007:-

South West 36%
North East 36%
West Midlands 35%
South East 32%
North West 31%
East of England 29%
South of England 29%
East Midlands 24%

Bill Thomson concluded:- “This increased confidence from retailers in the North West shows how the regeneration of many northern cities has stimulated their economies and has given retailers a renewed optimism in the retail industry.”
