DRUG MONEY FUNDS A LIVERPOOL FILM!!!
HAVE you ever
heard of a film which boasts that it was made using drug money?
Well, this one does. Under the Mud was written by teenagers in
Liverpool over 2 years and much of the cash to bring it to the big
screen came from a social fund from Glaxo Smith Kline, the world’s
largest drug manufacturer.
Made by Liverpool-based Hurricane Films, the project is also
supported by the Liverpool Culture Company, the film depicts a
hectic day in the life of a family from hell, or are they ‘one
hell of a family’? Praised by acclaimed actor / director
Kathy Burke, who called the script “a beautiful read”,
and hailed by Liverpool writer Jimmy McGovern as “a great
achievement”, Under the Mud will have a gala charity screening
at the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Hall on the 9 February 2007.
Liverpool City Council Leader, Cllr Warren Bradley, said:-
“This is a fine achievement and it’s great that Liverpool people are
one of the first to get to see it at this special charity screening.
It represents two years of work for the young people and they should
rightly be proud.”
Under the Mud has already screened to great acclaim at the Seagate
Foyle film festival in Ireland.
Shot in and around Speke and Garston, Liverpool, an area with high
unemployment with one of the worst teenage pregnancy rates in Europe, the action takes place during a hectic 24 hours, and centres
around the Potts household, 2nd home to teenage slacker, Magic,
who’s such a part of the furniture that his longing for the
eccentric beauty Paula Potts goes completely un-noticed. To the love
of his life he’s just her twin brother’s best mate.
With the family set on a course of self-destruction, aided by an old
enemy of Dad’s and Paula arguing with her imaginary friend about
running off to Ibiza with the local slime-ball, Magic realises that
he only has a few hours to save the family, get the girl and change
all of their lives forever.
The film stars Andrew Schofield, Kate
Fitzgerald and James McMartin (star of recently-released 'Dead
Men's Cards'), as well as some of the film's young writers,
most notably Lenny Wood in the lead role of 'Magic'.

A
huge Do‘neigh’tion!
CROXTETH Farm
has opened its stable doors to a huge new arrival. Tally, a 12
year old Cleveland Bay horse, is believed to be the 2nd largest of
its kind in Europe, standing at a massive 19 hands high, well above
the average of around 16. From the ground to the top of his
ears, he is the same height as a bus – and weighs over 150 stone.
The ex-police horse has been donated by local resident Mike Shaw and
his 15 year old daughter Stacey Leigh, as Tally has outgrown his
home with them.
Mike, who lives near Croxteth Hall and Park, said:- “Tally is
a lovely natured horse but has grown so large that we haven’t got
the room for him anymore – he’s even too big to fit into our horse
box! It was lucky we live so close to the park as we had to walk him
round there! My daughter and I decided that Croxteth Hall
would be the perfect home for Tally as there will be so much more
room for him to run around in. Also, it’s right on our doorstep so
it will be easy for us to visit him. Tally is only 12 which is
very young for a horse to be retired. I know he will love his new
home and I’m positive that visitors to the park will enjoy seeing
him.”
The newcomer now has an extended family of Farabella ponies and some
donkeys.
General manager of Croxteth Hall and Country Park, Irene Vickers,
said:- “Tally is a stunning looking animal and has a very
gentle nature. He is a welcome addition to the City Council’s
collection of rare breed animals and the staff at Croxteth Park’s
Home Farm will take good care of Tally.”
Cleveland Bay is the oldest breed of English horse and was used for
agriculture and also as coach horses.
REMINDER:- Bubbly Business
SMALL businesses are reminded
that the closing date for entries to British Small Business
Champions (BSBC) 2007 is 31 January 2007.
The annual BSBC awards were launched by the Federation of Small
Businesses (FSB) in 2003 because there were no national awards
schemes exclusively for small businesses.
Full details about BSBC 2007 and how it benefits businesses will be
found at
fsb.org.uk, where an application form can be
downloaded. Or, to get an application form sent telephone 0207 592
8120 or by
email. Nominations are also invited from staff and
customers of small businesses who should ring or e-mail and give the
address of the business which they wish to nominate and an
application form will be sent.
Noel Chadwick Ltd a previous regional finalist said that entering
was good for their business because entering:- “forced them to
look what we are good at, and flagging that up in the best possible
way - and, of course, what we are not so good at. It was a valuable
exercise in its own right. It cost nothing to enter except a bit of
time. The whole process was such a boost” And on the
publicity that BSBC generated:- “you couldn't buy publicity
like that. Well, you could but it would have cost much more than we
could have afforded!”
Each entry will be allocated to one of six geographical regions:-
Central; North; South; Wales; Scotland and Northern Ireland. Each
region will have an awards dinner to which regional finalists will
be invited and where the overall regional champion will be announced
and presented with an impressive trophy to keep. These six
businesses will go forward for national judging. All finalists will
be invited to the national awards celebration dinner in London,
where one will be announced as the British Small Business Champion
2007.
The national champion will win £10,000 to spend in the way it feels
will benefit its business and a further £5,000 will be given as a
donation to the champion's chosen charity. And, a splendid trophy to
keep.
Entries are invited from thriving, established (trading for more
than five years businesses employing less than 50 people (including
sole traders) which are highly regarded by customers and staff and
preferably involved in their local community. |
