Magic of Star Wars at Spaceport

An advance party of Storm Troopers at Spaceport

THE magic of Star Wars will come alive at Spaceport on the weekend of Saturday 31 March and Sunday 1 April 2007.  Called “Celebrating the magic of Star Wars”, the event gives budding Jedi Knights the chance to come and meet characters including Stormtroopers and Clonetroopers and real life stars of the movies – including the man who played Darth Vader.

Visitors can fight a laser battle in a Death Star, see real props from the films including a life size Speeder Bike, take part in a fancy dress competition (2 age groups; 5-10 and 11-15) and have their photograph taken with film characters.  Stars attending the event include Jeremy Bullock (who played Boba Fett), Warwick Davies (who played Ewok, Wicket) and Dave Prowse (Darth Vader).  And for fans of the blockbuster series there is an extra treat – the showing of a 24 minute film called “Return of the Ewok” made 24 years ago as a promotional film for Return of the Jedi but never released.

Spaceport is owned and operated by Merseytravel and is housed in a listed building alongside Seacombe Ferry Terminal in Wallasey, Merseyside.

Councillor Mark Dowd, Chair of Merseytravel, said:- “The tribute weekend will be fantastic for Star Wars fans – and for anyone else who wants to know all about the series.  Spaceport is proving to be a major educational and entertaining tourist attraction and we’re planning to bring many more special events like this.”

Also on hand will be Karen Traviss, author of numerous spin-off books about Star Wars including “Star Wars Republic Commando: Triple Zero” and "Star Wars: Legacy of the Force 5 – Sacrifice.”

Fun festival gets families fit!

A BRAND NEW festival is set to get Liverpool families as fit as a fiddle!  The inaugural Liverpool Festival of Health and Activity springs into life on 25 March, and it aims to place healthy lifestyles and exercise at the heart of families’ lives.

Local people, young and old, are being invited to join the free festivities, take part in fitness challenges and try out activities they’ve never tried before.  The Lifestyles Tennis Centre in Wavertree will be a hive of activity with rock climbing, keep-fit, yoga, tennis and trampolining.  There will be spin bike sessions, dance workouts and pilates. And families will also have the chance to take part in ‘beat the goalie’ challenges, massage sessions, cookery demonstrations and Quazar.  People can also hop on-board Liverpool’s healthy schools bus, which has stopped off at almost 80 Liverpool schools since it was launched last October, educating more than 3,000 children about healthy eating and exercise.

Liverpool City Council Leader Warren Bradley said:- “It’s vital that we place fitness, healthy eating and exercise at the heart of family life. This action-packed event will give local people of all ages a taste of how much fun being active can be. And it will give mums and dads lots of ideas on activities they can do with their children to get the whole family fit.  In recent years, we've made huge strides in combating poor health in Liverpool, breaking down barriers to health and fitness and reducing obesity in the city. Through this festival, we want to encourage thousands more people to get fit, active and healthy. It’s going to be a fantastic day.”

A huge range of exhibitors have signed-up to the event, and they will be available throughout the day to offer advice on issues including smoking cessation, alcohol awareness, nutrition, heart disease, weight management and cholesterol.  And a hi-tech machine – ‘The Biospace InBody 230’ – will give people the chance to get free tests on their body fat and overall fitness levels

John Marsden of Active City, said:- “From taking up a sport, to joining a gym or going on walks, there are so many ways people can build regular exercise into their everyday routine and keep active. The city’s first Festival of Health and Activity will give local families a fantastic introduction to the world of healthy eating and exercise.  We’re urging everybody in the city to join the festivities, have fun and try something new. It’s the perfect way for families to start their journeys on the road to a healthier future.”

Liverpool’s inaugural Festival of Health and Activity is being run by the city council in partnership with SK EVENTS. It is sponsored by Lifestyles, Liverpool Active City, Smoke Free Liverpool and Technogym.
