ANNUAL LORD MAYOR OF LIVERPOOL’S PARADE, 2007

THERE was a wonderful atmosphere as several thousand people turned out in the warm sunshine, on Saturday, 2 June 2007, for a very special Lord Mayor’s Parade, headed by the newly installed Lord Mayor and party, in his horse drawn carriage, heralded by the worthy Town Crier.

Very imaginative floats representing the various local communities and organisations wended their way across the City interspersed with columns of marchers, and an assortment of bands and dancing groups.

These groups reflected the diverse cultural influences, which over many years, have enriched Liverpool. The Deputy Chief Constable, riding a white horse, escorted by three mounted police officers, also took part in the parade.

Much effort had obviously been given to the many entries and the result was tremendous.

The uniformed services acquitted themselves well, as did the performers and collectors, all of whom must have been exhausted by the end of the Parade. Quietly and efficiently, as usual, the police, council workers and various support agencies played their part in maintaining safety and first aid services throughout.

The whole Parade was credit to Liverpool and bodes well for its time as International Capital of Culture, next year (2008).

At the Saluting Base situated in Castle Street, near the Town Hall, were various dignitaries and representatives of the various sections of the local community. Multi-ethnic groups, who form part of the fabric of this vibrant city, entertained the waiting crowd with music and dances. The lively Keith Price introduced this magnificent entertainment for about an hour before the Parade arrived. He then gave an excellent commentary on groups in the parade as they passed the Base, where some of the entrants stopped to perform.

The next major parade will be on 20 August 2007; the 800th Birthday Parade! Keep looking for further information.
