Cross party support for standalone personal finance qualification

MORE than 80 Members of Parliament have signed a parliamentary motion calling on the Government to encourage all schools to offer a standalone qualification in personal finance and to train more teachers to teach financial education. EDM 291 also recognises the achievements of the ifs School of Finance as the only provider of personal finance qualifications for 14 to 19 year olds.

Liberal Democrat MP and Shadow Chief Secretary to the Treasury, Julia Goldsworthy, who tabled the EDM, said:- “Many people struggle to manage their finances effectively, primarily as a result of poor levels of financial capability. This has implications not only for the individual concerned but also for the wider community and the economy as a whole.  Low levels of financial capability can be remedied by ensuring all students have access to meaningful financial education. However, with the exception of the ifs School of Finance qualifications, there is currently a real lack of financial education in schools and that’s why we are calling on the Government to take such action.”

Anne Kiem, Director of External Affairs at the ifs School of Finance, stated;- “The ifs School of Finance firmly believes that financial education should be a dedicated standalone subject, rather than being scattered across a range of non-statutory, non assessed subjects such as citizenship, enterprise education or PSHE as the Government intend.  We are therefore pleased that so many politicians from across the political spectrum have called on the Government to encourage all schools to offer a standalone subject in personal finance.  We are particularly pleased that Labour, Liberal Democrat and Conservative members of the influential Treasury Select Committee have also signed the motion.”

The ifs School of Finance would like to see all schools offering their students the opportunity to gain personal financial management skills, as Anne Kiem concluded:- "At present secondary schools are compelled to ensure their students have the option to study History, Geography or a Modern Foreign language and the ifs School of Finance would like the Government to add Personal Finance to this list of options.  Adding Personal Finance to the curriculum in this way would give financial education an equal footing with a wide range of other subjects, demonstrating that Government is serious about the need for future generations to become financially capable. We believe doing so would lead to a step change in the number of young people leaving school with the necessary skills to manage their own finances effectively.”

Overweight and Adventurous Teenagers wanted for BBC Three Series

ARE you adventurous, fun and up for a challenge?

BBC Three is looking for teenagers who consider themselves overweight to embark on the adventure of a lifetime living with a tribe in a remote area of the world.

Last year BBC Three’s Fat Men Can’t Hunt saw eight adults head out to the Kalahari Desert to live with a bushman tribe. Learning to hunt and gather for themselves the eight adventurers had the opportunity to prove that size really doesn’t matter. This year it will be teenagers that will get the chance to show what they are made of with a new tribe in another exciting location.

This is an amazing opportunity for 16 - 19 year olds to have an experience they will never forget.

For one month ten teenagers will live amongst a native group of people in a remote wilderness area, where they will learn to live life as it used to be. The teens will be taught to Hunt and gather, eating only a natural and unprocessed diet.

Top British nutritionist Alice Sykes will lead the teenagers through the experiment teaching them about nutrition and helping the group to change their food habits so that they can live a healthier and more active lifestyle permanently.

If you are 16 to 19 years old and fancy putting your outward-bound skills to the test while losing a bit of weight in the process then this could be the project you’re looking for.

Tribal mentors will teach the group a wealth of survival skills. This is an opportunity like never before.

If you feel bored, in a rut and desperate for a change of lifestyle this is the show for you!
