The end to the Postal Strike...

THE national postal strike finished last week on Wednesday 11 October 2007, but Liverpool workers at Liverpool’s sorting offices staged an unofficial strike, called by Communication Workers Union (CWU). The wild cat strike meant even more postal Merseyside area. One of the victims was the Liverpool - Everton Darby, as fans panicked to get their tickets that where suck in the post and the two football clubs had to make alternative arrangements for fans to collect them. Thankfully for many customers using the Royal Mail, more than 800 post staff made the decision at The Liner Hotel in the city to go back to work on the morning of Friday 19 October 2007. CWU official Mark Walsh said:- "We are obviously glad to get our members back to work, get the public's mail out and keep negotiations about working hours on the table." Meanwhile, fresh talks are being held between both sides in the national dispute over pay, jobs and pensions.

A proposed deal was thrashed out on the Friday between leaders of the CWU and Royal Mail chief executive Adam Crozier, which included a 6.9% pay rise over 2 years.

A Royal Mail spokesman said:- "Royal Mail has agreed to meet with the union to clarify outstanding issues, but an agreement has been reached and endorsed by CWU general secretary Billy Hayes and deputy general secretary Dave Ward stands."
