Albert Square is “dream community

FORGET Posh ‘n’ Becks, Brits want the Angie 'n' Den lifestyle.  DESPITE the murders, house fires and high percentage of extra-marital affairs, EastEnders’ Albert Square is a dream neighbourhood for millions of Brits.

It may be losing the ratings war, but Albert Square embodies the most desirable type of community for 41% of Brits, according to Somerfield’s ongoing Local Life report which quizzed 2,035 UK adults.  Complete with much-loved features such as an allotment (desired by 46%), community centre (60%) and street market (59%), Walford’s signature square (64%) and tube station (78%) leave it streets ahead of Weatherfield, Emmerdale Farm and Hollyoaks Village.  Another feature unique to Walford that renders it so popular is the proximity of the launderette (important to 22%) and Indian restaurant (27%) to home.

The factory and cobbled streets of Coronation Street’s Weatherfield are far less sought-after with just 10% opting for this style of neighbourhood.

All soaps do share one quality that Brits yearn for – closeness. 32% wish their work and families were on their doorstep. In fact, there is no better place to socialise than the local grocer (38%), public bench (21%) or launderette (5%) according to the report.  One amenity on Albert Square that needs improving, however, is its infamous public house – modern Britons would much prefer a pint in the Woolpack (19%) or the Rovers’ Return (13%) than the tumultuous Queen Vic (10%).

Local Life also introduces The Drama Index which exposes where in the UK life most resembles a soap opera. Analysing the number of jilted brides, home-wrecking plots and long lost relatives, the Midlands appear top of the Index while those hoping for the quiet life should move to Scotland.

The Drama Index

1.  Midlands
2.  North West
2.  North East
4.  South West
5.  East Anglia
5.  London
7.  South
8.  Wales
9.  Yorkshire
10. Scotland

Soapland is clearly not a far cry from reality for 9% of  Brits who have had a public argument with a neighbour or for the 7% who had a ‘long lost’ relative return to their life ‘Dirty Den style’. In the (varicose) vein of Dot and Jim Branning or Frank and Pat Butcher, 1.4 million UK adults have had a relationship with or married a neighbour.

The least popular TV neighbourhood was Hollyoaks Village, as only 7% felt a university town with lots of young peoplewas their ideal community - this choice was notably more popular with men (9%) than women (5%).

Pete Williams, head of press and PR at Somerfield said:- “For decades, soap operas have been portraying community life. Now it appears that Brits actually prefer the rough and tumble of soap communities to their own reality. With local grocers, work and family close to hand, there is rarely a need for characters to leave their neighbourhood. And with so much drama, life is kept interesting.”
