Match Reports

Under 14

Southport FC 0 Skem Rangers 6  -  A good match played by both teams but it took at least 15 mins for the teams to start playing. Rangers took their chances well as a cross from James Edgar was met by Dale Slater to open the scoring. Almost immediately James Edgar hit the second from the edge of the box into the roof of the net. Just before half time Paul Bennett got Rangers third with a tap in on the line.

In the second half Rangers maintained their possession and were rewarded with Josh Seddon scoring a brace, his first coming in from the wing to hit a near post shot in and his second coming from a corner. Ryan Quine completed the scoring driving a shot across goal hitting the post and going in. Well Done to both teams who played the match in a fantastic spirit.

Rangers Man of The Match:- Josh Seddon

Trinity 1 Southport Juniors 5  -   A New Year brought together Southport's top two teams who over the years have produced some great games and hard fought battles with very little in the score lines. The Rookery pitch was in superb condition for the time of year and only a swirling wind hampered the football both teams served up. Southport FCJ started the brighter and had the early chances. Sam Johnson, Rob Handsford, Oliver Cunningham and Robson Baldwin were outstanding at the back for SFCJ and cut out any threat Trinity tried to put on their goal, this strength from a truly outstanding defence allowed their midfield to push forward and Tom Rogers, Anthony Brown, Gary Grier and Owen Drummond took advantage to set up numerous chances for James Smith and Ryan Pytel.  It was a matter of time before the deadlock was broken when Grier cut in from the left to find Smith who slid....... ...continued....

...continued.... .......a pass to Drummond to hammer a shot into the roof of the net from close range.  Trinity responded in a positive manner with Nathan Thistlewaite combining with Christy Devlin who's shot rattled the side netting although Callum Jones the SFCJ keeper had it covered. Scott Walkerdine marshalled things at the back for Trinity but SFCJ always had a the advantage and only some fine goalkeeping by Mathew Gautry kept the score at 0 v 1 at the interval.

SFCJ made two forced changes at the interval with Ryan Rytel and Oliver Cunningham taking knocks in the first half but SFCJ have strength in depth and Mat Peterson and Zack Evans who came on to make his debut. It was Peterson who pushed forward and again some slick passing saw the ball fall to Drummond to rifle home his second goal of the game. SFCJ had the bit between their teeth and the fox in the box James Smith went on a solo run and eluded two defenders to hit a shot into the far side of the net from a tight angle. Shortly after a free kick to SFCJ midway in the Trinity half saw Sam Johnson step up and place a shot into the net to extend SFCJ's lead. Trinity hit back with Scott Walkerdine hammering a right foot shot into the corner of the net which was just rewards for Trinity who on another day will get the rewards their effort deserved. The climax of the game saw a goal of sheer class from Dan Thompson from well over 25 yards out he hit a thunderbolt of a shot that flew into the top corner of the net to make things worse for Trinity just as a fight back seemed on the cards. Jorge Jones came on as a late sub and nearly added to his total for the season but shot narrowly wide. Anthony Brown and Tom Rogers bossed the middle of the park overpowering Trinity's midfield but for all round commitment and endeavour it had to be Owen Drummond to be awarded the Man of the Match.

Birkdale B 2 Birkdale J 1  -
The second game of the season between these two club sides saw a highly competitive game from the off. The first corner kick was won by Birkdale B which lead to a shot on goal forcing Birkdale J keeper Dan Griffiths to make a fine save. The Renacres Hospital sponsored side Birkdale J applied equal pressure and had the ball kicked off the line denying them a goal. Liam Jackson made some excellent crosses into the box which Birkdale J failed to capitalise on. Twelve minutes into the game a corner kick to Birkdale J was taken by Luke Williams, which lead to shot on goal by Reece Gaskell just wide of the post and Harry Losty was unlucky to see his shot also go wide. Birkdale B drove forward and was on on line for a shot when defender Sam Howard made a splendidly timed tackle to keep Birkdale J out of danger. A chance came for Birkdale J when they were awarded an indirect free kick in the penalty area, but again, failed to make anything out of it. Pressure again from Birkdale B led to an own goal by Birkdale J giving them the lead. Birkdale B were then awarded an penalty kick which went just wide of the post giving a half time score of 1-0 to Birkdale B.

The second half saw the appearance of Nick Knight in goal for Birkdale J and following a goalmouth scramble Birkdale B scored again. Birkdale J had chances and then the breakthrough came with a goal from Dom Platts. Birkdale J were given a penalty kick which was taken by Dom Platts and saved by the Birkdale B keeper. Towards the end of the game Birkdale B were awarded a free kick which lead to a save from Nick Knight.

A hard fought game and some strong performances from Greg Rawsthorne playing in an unusual defensive role, Jack Young, Lewis Burrows and Liam Aindow.

Formby B 2 Town Green 4  -  Fresh from the festive break, Town Green started the New Year with a bang at Formby today. Rested and revived from the Christmas holiday, Town Green continued from where they left off last year, with a dazzling display of top class football, which is hopefully a sign of what we can expect to see for the rest of 2008.

Town Green started brightly and confidently and got the scoring started with a beautiful, Beckham-esque free-kick from Theo Chrisokhou, giving TG the early lead. A second TG goal soon followed from Kieron Turner, who volleyed brilliantly into the back of the Formby net.

Some persistent pressure from Formby presented the Town Green defenders with problems, but Danny Pugh, Theo Chrisokhou, Rian Eades and Jake Beesley stood strong and solid and coupled with some fine goalkeeping from Anthony Caunce, kept Formby at bay.

However, Formby's perseverance eventually paid off when they finally found the back of the net and then again a couple of minutes after that. Game on.

When Town Green stepped up their game, it was George Newell who finished perfectly to make the half time score 3-2.

With everything to play for, both teams came out fighting in the second half and it was real end to end football. However, some dominant Town Green play and perfectly timed passing found Connor Tierney who, with an excellently taken goal, scored Town Green's fourth. Jack McGregor was unlucky not to get on the scoresheet and had a good, solid game, as did Connor Stockwell on the wing and JJ McNicholas in defence.

Josh Donson and Jonathan Campbell battled hard in midfield and when Callum Birchall came on, he ran Formby ragged with his lightning runs down the wing.

This was a close fought game but on the day, Town Green deservedly took the points.

Town Green's Man of the Match was Danny Pugh. His consistency, bravery and all round hard work was recognised by his manager, who duly awarded the well deserved accolade to Danny. Well played Dan. Well played Town Green.

Tarleton 2 Jaguars Red 3  -  The match started well on a muddy pitch as both sides contested every ball. The Jags held their positions well and kept Tarleton at bay.

As the half was drawing to a close, Tyler Rimmer’s through ball was latched onto by Jaguars Kyle Bell who slotted home.

Almost as the second half started, the lead was doubled with Tyler Rimmer’s run ending in a perfectly placed ball at the feet of Josh Hilton who calmly converted.

Tarleton then took advantage of Jags having dropped back and quickly reduced the deficit then equalized in the space of five minutes.  Despite chances at both ends the game looked set to be a draw but with minutes to go Kyle Bell got his second of the match and Jags third to make it 3-2 to the Jags.

This was Jaguars Red’s first ever victory and credit goes to them and to Tarleton for an exciting and competitive game.

Southport B 0 Jaguars White 1  -
What a great game. Both teams tried really hard and the first half was end to end with neither team taking any of the advantages from good open play. Jags missed a great chance when, in front of goal, the ball just wouldn't get out of Ben Shenton's feet and the tackle came in from the Southport defence. Ryan Ashall had a hand in several attacks as his running with the ball caused problems to the other defence. All that was lacking was the final ball.

The second half started the same but the Jags turned on the pressure and had the majority of the play - although Southport were counter-attacking really well. A ball in from the right caused problems in Southport's defence and the referee had no hesitation in awarding a penalty after the defender from Southport put his arms up to stop the ball. Up stepped Ryan Ashall and put the ball in the top corner. 0-1

Southport really tried hard to get the equaliser - Kyle Dawes was immense today and Zayn Noray hardly put a foot wrong. Southport had several scrambles in the area but there was always a white shirt to block and tackle, right till the end. Jags tried to hit Southport on the break and Ben was always threatening up front. A run by Lewis almost created a second, and Joshua worked really hard on the right of midfield. Both goalkeepers from the Jaguars made good saves today and for the first time this season the Whites kept their concentration to the final whistle and took all three points.

Town Green 3 Ormskirk FC 2  -  This was a great local derby played at a blistering pace and in a great spirit. Ormskirk took the lead in the first minute through Jamie Barnes's quick thinking to pounce on a back pass and poke the ball past the keeper. Town Green came back into the game and equalised on the stroke of half time.

Despite the great efforts of the back three Adam Jones, Elliot Fitzpatrick and Alex Wong, Town Green scored twice at the start of the second half.  Elliot Fitzpatrick was superb passing the ball out of defence rather than just clearing his lines.

Ormskirk came close after a great Matthew Woods corner was met with a header from Jamie Barnes that skimmed the bar. Tom Bigland and Matthew Woods came close to scoring but it was man of the match Jamie Barnes who got his and Ormskirk's second with a twenty yard strike.

Town Green are a good side but a draw would have been a fair result in a very open game.
