KEY WORKERS GIVEN A BOOST ONTO THE PROPERTY LADDER IN LIVERPOOL

Stewart Milne’s contemporary apartments at Kaber Court, in Liverpool

ESSENTIAL workers like nurses, firemen and teachers are being offered a discount on a range of contemporary apartments close to Liverpool city centre.  The fantastic offer is available at Stewart Milne’s Kaber Court development and affords those officially classified as key workers the opportunity to purchase selected properties at £2,000 below market value.

The annual Halifax Key Worker Housing Review revealed that 5 groups of public sector workers – nurses, police officers, paramedics, fire fighters and teachers - were unable to afford to buy a home in 70% of towns across Great Britain so Stewart Milne’s offer will come as welcome relief to buyers in Liverpool.

Rachel MacCutchan, sales manager for Stewart Milne’s North West division, said:- “It is often a struggle for essential workers to get onto the property ladder and we are hoping to make life that bit easier for them by offering them affordable homes with a discount.  Provided they meet the relevant criteria – they will be able to purchase the apartments with an additional discount of £2,000 below the open market value.”

Kaber Court is an executive range of 2-bedroom apartments, many with fantastic views of the river and Liverpool’s famous landmarks, including the Liver Buildings, Anglican Cathedral and Albert Docks.  Situated on the historic former site of the Mersey Iron and Steel Works, off Horsfall Street, the stylish new homes are perfect for people working in key occupations in and around Liverpool, with convenient access to the city centre by road and a walkway between the development and Brunswick railway station, giving a direct service into the city centre.  The development is less than a mile away from Liverpool Women’s hospital, Merseyside Police headquarters, at Canning Place, and no fewer than 10 primary schools.

Rachel added:- “Kaber Court has everything a buyer could look for in a property. The apartments are secure, easy to maintain, and close to the heart of this vibrant city with its fashionable shops, world-class restaurants and famous night life.”

Many of the apartments, which all come with a parking space and bicycle stand, are ready to move into immediately, with prices starting from £114,950 before discount.  All properties come complete with fitted kitchens and bathrooms, with chic laminate flooring, and a spacious open plan kitchen and living area. Apartments are available with en-suites and all have either a walk-on or Juliette balcony and have a contemporary design twist to appeal to young professionals.

To be eligible for a discount applicants must be a teacher, health worker, police officer, prison officer, probation officer, social worker, occupational therapist or educational psychologist, be in full time employment, and have been in their current role for a minimum of six months and not own another property.  The show apartment is available to view by appointment by calling 0161 866 6969

The development is Scotland based Stewart Milne Homes’ first venture in Liverpool since it expanded into the North West of England. It also has a number of successful developments in Wigan, Middleton, Whitefield, and Strines.

PARENTS LETTING YOUNG CHILDREN DOWN WITH ORAL HEALTHCARE

PARENTS are letting their young children down by failing to help them look after their teeth according to the National Dental Survey 2008, which found that more than 20% of under-5 years olds are being left to brush unsupervised.

The survey was conducted by the British Dental Health Foundation and Oral B to mark National Smile Month (18 May 2008 to 17 June 2008) but it found that children have little to smile about when it comes to oral healthcare - thanks to their parents.  A staggering 25% of parents believe that children do not need to brush twice a day, 23% think there is no need for children to avoid fizzy drinks and 67% believe that brushing for just 1 minute is recommended - rather than the optimum 2 minutes.

Dr Nigel Carter, chief executive of the Foundation, commented:- "These results really are very worrying and help explain why around half of children under the age of five currently have tooth decay here in the UK.  Teaching children good dental habits is vital. Not only has research shown that people who learn good habits as children are far more likely to carry them into adulthood, but taking bad habits into adulthood will cause gum disease and this has been linked to all manner of serious conditions including diabetes, strokes, heart disease and low birth weight babies.  Oral health is often seen as of secondary importance to general health but that is wrong. The 'Brush for Health' theme of this year's National Smile Month will make the public aware of the very real links between oral health and overall body health."

It seems that many UK children do take their bad oral healthcare habits into adulthood.  The survey also found that 29% of UK adults suffer with bleeding gums and almost half of those simply ignore it or brush their teeth more softly to avoid aggravating it.

Dr Carter continued:- "Bleeding gums are a sign of a poor oral healthcare routine and, if left, can lead to serious health problems.  People need to brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, cut down how often they have sugary foods and drinks and visit the dentist regularly, as often as they recommend if they want to keep their gums and body healthy.  The message of the campaign is Brush for Health and people need to take that literally if they are to stay healthy. Remember, your mouth and your body talk - so look after them both!"

Dr Gary Stephenson, Oral-B dental expert commented:- "Developing a good tooth brushing habit in the young is critical to caring for your child.

Choosing the right toothbrush and paste is important in making tooth brushing an enjoyable activity especially with parental encouragement.

Only you as a parent can ensure your child has a good brushing technique from an early age by being with them and encouraging good practice.  If you are unsure ask your dentist or hygienist.

It can also be one of those special bonding moments with your child, as you encourage them to look after their milk teeth to keep the tooth fairy happy and ensure they develop the habits to look after their second teeth"

Dr Stephenson, continued:- "We focus on developing products that encourage children to enjoy brushing their teeth in the right way, with specially designed brushes for small hands and mouths, and fluoride toothpaste with appealing flavours all with attractive designs to encourage children through the different stages of development to enjoy brushing their teeth.

We know how important early development of a good tooth brushing habit and technique is and do all we can to encourage it. It is up to the parents then to choose the right products, supervise their brushing and most of all encourage their children."
