The British Musical Fireworks Championships 2008

			IT was a blast
at this year’s British Musical Fireworks Championships, entitled the
"Champion of Champions" from 3 October to 5 October
2008. This was the 10th Anniversary of what is now regarded as one
of the best-synchronised display competitions in the UK. Each show
lasted approximately 16 to 18 minutes, each night, judged by
professional and lay judges. The sparkling displays of colour this
year were performed by the best of all the professional UK firework
companies and teams, who have competed at this event. The teams on
the first two nights braved very bad conditions setting up and
firing, with wind restricting the displays and making the set up
hard going. Most of the teams started their set-up from 6am on the
day they were due to fire, often lasting until 5pm that night with
last minute fixing and adjustments running right up to firing... The
worst weather hit on the Saturday, with not one, but three
magnificent displays illuminating the dark and very damp night.
Sadly, the bad weather put many people off on the Saturday, but all
who came to it were treated to not one, not even the normal two
displays, but this time three teams blasted the rain away. The marks
were adjusted to take into account the poor conditions on both
Friday and Saturday nights, as Sunday was to reveal a remarkable
change in the weather conditions. Even the set up conditions for the
teams were better, as they laid out their displays under a pure blue
sky. As the night fell, despite the cold, the two teams due to fire
kept an eye on the clouds building in the distance, but the wind
that had plagued the other two nights displays and the driving rain
held off. The result was truly outstanding with Southport's skyline
illuminated and magnificent reflections falling across the now still
Marine Lake. Even Pen Dragon Fireworks managed to release their
small hot air balloon lights into the virtually still air. By the
end of Sunday, a Champion had been revealed in what had been such a
close competition, with such dazzling and memorable entertainment
for all ages. The winner was declared on Sunday night as Jubilee
Fireworks, who blasted away the competition with a truly remarkably
timed performance on the Sunday night. Also, for the pyrotechnic
fans, they used Fire One to synchronise their winning display. To
find out more about this truly stunning event please go to the BMFC
			media sponsor's

			website, (Champion Newspaper)
and find out the full results and more.  We have also put a
video of the winning team's display on our TV site,

			Southport.TV
			for you to watch. It
was a magnificent way to tie in with European Capital Of Culture
Year in Liverpool and shows that no matter what the conditions, this
event will never stop amazing the spectators. Well done to Sefton
MBC for organising this event and to all the teams who took part.
