Match Reports Week Ending 26 October 08

Southport Trinity Blue 5-2 Southport FC Juniors Black

Trinity welcomed a very lively Southport team who have really come on in recent weeks.  The match started a little flat but a foul on C Rimmer 30 yards out brought the 1st goal, with L Harwood stepping up to fire home. Southport then pushed forward getting a couple of corners, but it was Trinity who scored next after great work from F.Anelli who played J Wallbank in with a beautiful pass to finish well.  Trinity then had chances with L Harwood hitting the post twice and J Lenart tipping J Wallbanks shot on to the bar but Juniors didn't sit back and played themselves back into the game.  L Regan finished well from a corner for Trinity to put them 2-1 up and they added a 3rd through a great J McCormack finish.

The 2nd half started with a spell of pressure from Southport Juniors, which left J Pennington with a tap in at the back post and they were back in the game at 3.2.  The next few minutes were the most important of the game, Trinity worked hard and scored through L Harwood finishing calmly.  Trinity then played some great football going close on a number of occasions before J Wallbank got the final goal with a bullet header crashing in off the bar to make the final score 5.2.

There were good performances from both sides today but man of the match went to J.Wallbank (Trinity) and L Seddon-Rimmer (S/port Juniors) both putting in great effort for their team.

Town Green 3-1 Ormskirk West End

This local derby between Town Green and Ormskirk West End came at a time when both teams are currently standing proud at the top of the league table. Therefore, there was much at stake and had the makings of being a thoroughly entertaining game. Indeed it was.

Both teams came out fighting and there was nothing to split either side. OWE had the first chance of the game after a good team move left Matty Peterson 1-on-1 with the keeper, only to have his shot superbly saved by Anthony Caunce.  OWE were 1st to score through a fantastic Matty Peterson goal, which was placed brilliantly into the back of the net from a very tight angle after the outcoming keeper had run out trying to force him wide.  Town Green responded instantaneously when the superb Jack McGregor had a strike a goal which the OWE keeper could only parry. This was swooped on by Connor Tierney who made no doubt by slotting the ball into the back of the net to equalise.  Ross Paxton was unlucky not to score when he had a fine shot at goal saved superbly by the OWE keeper to deny TG taking the lead before half time.

Both teams came out fighting in the 2nd half and a real midfield battle ensued. Kieron Turner, Josh Donson and Connor Stockwell worked hard to contain the lively Matty Hilton, Jamie Charnock and William Tabarn.  Defensively, both side’s players had their work cut out. Theo Chrisokhou, Rian Eades, George Newell and Jake Beesley played confidently and methodically and with the utmost composure, as did Sean Weston, Charles Coldrick, Jack C and Tom Bunclark for OWE.  Just as the game looked to be heading for a certain draw, TG had a penalty awarded for handball. The inimitable George Newell, who blasted his shot straight into the corner of the net, converted this coolly.  The impressive Jack McGregor made it 3-1 after a fantastic solo run down the wing, where he hit an amazing goal right into the top corner.

Town Green had many contenders for Man of the Match today with Jack McGregor having an outstanding game and Theo Chrisokhou being particularly effective at the back. However, the accolade today went to George Newell for his overall contribution to the game. George can be asked to play absolutely anywhere. He always gives 110% and always has a smile on his face. His challenges today were breathtaking and he thwarted many an OWE attack. He manages to cover every inch of the pitch with his pace and speed. He is a superb team player and a valuable asset to Town Green.

Forefield 5-3 Ainsdale

Ainsdale were caught napping, 30 seconds into the game and Forefield had scored.   Liam Getchell was unlucky not to equalise as he passed the Keeper, but his shot lacked power and was cleared off the line by a defender.  Forefield then passed the ball around in the Ainsdale box only for the eventual shot to rebound out off the post to be cleared by Tom Harrison.  Ainsdale's Lee Tierney hit the ball past the keeper who had come out to equalise but Forefield to take the lead again 3 minutes later with a powerful shot which left Rhys Crowther no chance of saving.

5 minutes into the 2nd half a lovely Ainsdale 1-2-3 of Deary, Tierney and then Getchell brought the score back level.  Ainsdale took the lead following Tierney's ball over the defence which allowed Deary to slot past the Keeper. Ainsdale's attack continued, but could not bury the chances that were coming their way as the Forefield defence had been shocked back into action.
A little time out for an injury seemed to unsettle Ainsdale who didn't manage to defend a Forefield corner and we were back to level terms.  Ainsdale's heads went down and completely lost their shape, from then on it was all Forefield, who managed 2 more, the 2nd being from another corner.

Jackymundos 2-3 Millennium Boys

Millennium boys took an early lead just after losing their goalie due to injury when Peter Donnelly closed down the opposition keeper to score.  Soon after Luke Charlesworth put them 2-0 up from the spot and then just before half time the impressive Mikey Murphy put the away side 3 up.

In the 2nd half Mundos replied with 2 late strikes but they never recovered from the blistering first half performance from the visitors.  MOM Mikey Murphy.
