Green Party Euro candidate to visit Ormskirk

PETER Cranie, the Green Party's prospective candidate for north-west England in June next year, is speaking at an Open Meeting of West Lancs Green Party.

THE get-together is at the Greyhound pub (near Morrisons supermarket), Aughton Street, Ormskirk on Thursday, 30 October 2008, at 8 pm. Everyone is welcome.

Peter is the lead Green Party candidate for the North West Region in the 2009 European Elections. He works for a Parenting Support Charity on Merseyside and has extensive experience as a lecturer and working in the social care sector.

Peter's message to voters:- "This European Election is absolutely crucial for Britain. The economy is on the rocks, we still have huge social inequalities in Britain and voters have become disillusioned with the red, yellow and blue parties.

At times like this, voters need to hear from a progressive and positive political alternative, because the far right is on the rise in Britain. The election in the North West for 4th place is crucial for Britain. Electing a Green MEP will be adding to a team of hard working Greens in Europe, and a team that scores 100% for transparency and honest reporting.

I was inspired to join the Green Party in 1999 after seeing the impact of Greens like Jean Lambert, Caroline Lucas and Robin Harper winning parliamentary seats in Scotland and Europe.

We need Greens elected at all levels of government, and an alternative vision to simple managerial and private sector politics. The job of politicians is to deliver good public services for all people and to safeguard our interests and security. Climate change is an emerging threat that is not being treated with the urgency required. Only by electing more Greens will you get action on this issue."

His specialist focus is electoral strategy and his campaigning background is in anti-racist and anti-fascist work and strategy. He also strongly in favour of promoting energy efficiency and investing in renewable micro generation as a way of lifting pensioners and other low income households out of the fuel poverty trap.

According to the Grean Party "Peter has considerable experience as a former FE/HE lecturer and as a practitioner in Social Work. He has been active in Liverpool Green Party since 2001, where the Greens have seen their vote consistently increase year on year at a local level. Liverpool Riverside constituency saw the best result for the Greens in the North West region in 2005, with 5.5% of the vote."

Euro MP says Shield’s must now be freed

LOCAL Labour Euro MP, Arlene McCarthy said on 24 October 2008 that:- “Today’s ruling by the high court judge is a positive step forward in the campaign to free Michael Shields. It reaffirms what I have always been led to believe by Brussels based legal experts that the receiving country, the UK, does have the power under the Convention on the Transfer of Prisoners to release Michael.

Where there has been such a blatant case of a miscarriage of justice and where the Bulgarian justice system has failed to allow Michael to prove his innocence I see no reason why we need their permission or agreement to release him.

I hope that the further ruling will confirm this and that Michael will be freed, reunited with his family and allowed to get on with his life.”

Local Labour Euro MP Arlene McCarthy, has been campaigning for justice for Michael since he was first arrested in May 2005.

Letters to the Editor:- "Royal Mail's doubled profits"

"NEWS that the Royal Mail has doubled its profits over the last six months whilst over 1,500 post offices are to be shut down will incense your readers....

Royal Mail’s round of closures was based on economic viability, highlighting the hypocrisy of this £177 million profit.  The Countryside Alliance has campaigned hard for the thousands of threatened branches.

A lack of economic viability should never have been the main reason for closures; Post Offices form the hearts of their communities and many isolated and elderly people will be stranded without them.  Royal Mail should perhaps consider that Post Offices are about people, not profits?" Simon Hart, Chief Executive, Countryside Alliance
