With nearest rivals Fleetwood being held to a draw, Trinity stretched their lead at the top.

Ainsdale Juniors 0-4 Southport Trinity Blue

Southport Trinity made the short journey to Ainsdale looking for the win which would keep them 5 points clear.

Trinity started very slowly as they tried to get an upper hand in the middle of the park but Ainsdale frustrated Trinity and would not allow them time on the ball.  Sam Wallbank fired wide then had two efforts saved well by the in form Ainsdale keeper. Cameron Rimmer raced clear only for the keeper to tip his effort round the post.  Trinity broke the deadlock 2 minutes before half time. Sam Wallbank took on a couple of players then crossed for Joe Wallbank to tap in.

Half time subs Jay McCormack and Lewis Harwood were soon in the action, combining for Jay McCormack to tap in from close range.  Fabrizio Anelli and Sam Wallbank both saw their shots sail over before Sam Wallbank finished a good move involving several players.  Trinity played much better in the 2nd half creating some good chances and defending well, They pushed to the final whistle, Lewis Harwood missing 2 good chances and Andy Thorpe blasting wide from a free kick, before Jay McCormack finished at the near post from a Lewis Harwood corner to make the final score 4-0.

Ainsdale defended well today and battled to the end. Man of the match went to Sam Wallbank after a good display of holding the ball up and creating plenty of chances for his team mates.

Birkdale’s only remaining rivals, Formby, dropped points today but it could still go to the wire.

Crosby Stuart 0-2 Birkdale United N

Both teams made a bright start to this important end of season fixture with Birkdale needing to win to make certain of second place and to give themselves a chance of winning the league if Formby B fail to win their 3 remaining games.

Both teams played some good football but were unable to create any clear cut chances. Jack Grant was in the thick of the action early on taking charge of the Birkdale midfield.  After 20 minutes, Crosby Stuart had the best chance of the 1st half when a through ball was picked up by one of their players who ran on and shot only for Nick Knight to make an excellent 1 handed save pushing the ball over the crossbar.  The score remained 0 – 0 until half time.

Birkdale started the 2nd half with renewed purpose and after 2 minutes, following a great run by Liam Jackson, unselfishly sliding the ball across the goal for Max Regan to slot the ball into the net, 1 – 0.  Birkdale continued to enjoy slightly the better of possession and were rewarded with a 2nd goal after 12 minutes, again made by a Liam Jackson jinking run, with Luke Williams blasting the ball into the back of the net, 2 – 0.  The game continued to ebb and flow for the next 10 minutes with both teams having chances but neither side being able to gain any advantage.

After 22 minutes, Crosby Stuart were again denied a goal by Nick Knight with a brave save rushing out and diving at the feet of the advancing striker.  Crosby Stuart continued to launch the ball forward at every opportunity but the Birkdale defence held firm and the midfield and forwards continued to pose their own threat at the other end.

On the whole a good performance from Birkdale doing enough to deserve the win, but Crosby Stuart played their part to make this an exciting match to watch.

Man of the Match this week was Nick Knight for some great match winning saves.
