			Paul Young and the Los
			Pacaminos twist the night away!

THE night started on the right note, thanks to the talented
solo support act Ben Montague, who was playing live in Liverpool for
the first time. Even though he was from London, he had a very
Liverpudlian type of humour and livened up what was a very reserved
audience. The average age of the audience must have been around 35,
and mainly female. Ben has a very good alto voice and mixed his
acoustic numbers in with very lively banter and jokes, to good
effect on stage. His music mixes ballads and pop country making a
very refreshing change to many events we have covered in the last
few months. His songs and music are very atmospheric and blend in a
way that is very easy on the ear. I would love to see him again,
even more with a band. But all good things come to and end. Then the
main act came on. Well what an interesting entrance… They were
played on with the sounds of Westons, with performers wearing US
wild west hats, then came the show. I could just sum it up by saying
what it was... amazing... but I have to say a bit more than that...
The venue's acoustics are extremely interesting and even though the
venue is more like a cavern, the sound crew made it sound more like
an arena. Fantastic tone ranges and no echo, not an easy job in such
an unusual building. This added to the impact of what was a very
highly energetic and lively performance that had a very personal
feel and yet the sounds of a large event. The band was not what I
expected at all, with a wide range of highly talented members. I was
told in the release before the event that, "Paul is not the
only luminary in the seven piece band." and they were not
joking! It would have been easy for them to have tried to outstage
each other, as they were some of the best musicians in the business,
yet they were more like a local band, playing for fun, often
encouraging the audience to participate in their tomfoolery. Twice
the band played the classic piece, Tacella, and had two ladies
bringing shots on stage for the band... Incidentally the 2nd girl to
go on stage with shots was Saharan, who was celebrating her
birthday. At this point I must talk about one of the UK’s finest and
best loved vocalists, Paul Young. Paul was fantastic on the night
and blended in to the band extremely well. The audience seemed not
to care that the focus was not on him and he kept that focus on the
band throughout. The band’s name may mean little to music lovers, as
of yet, but the release of the songs they played on the night, on
their long-awaited first album, original titled "Los Pacaminos",
should make this band far better known. Within the band’s mix of
Tex-Mex classics and Spanish songs on the night, they played a
fantastic version of a Chuck Berry, used in 'Pulp Fiction',
'Mam mazel'. They also added in to the two part set
original material. It is hard to say what makes up the music of Los
Pacaminos, other than country rock meets Brit pop. Our verdict is,
if you want a fantastic fun night see them live. And if the CD is as
good as the night, I look forward to playing it!  As the poster
said:- "Los Pacaminos are a band you can absolutely count on
for a great night out!" We will let the posts give you an
idea of what happened on the night...
