RWANDAN PUPILS’ JOY AT RANGE HIGH SCHOOL’S GIFT

USING solar power to play a keyboard was the enterprising solution employed by Rwandan students when they were presented with the musical instrument from kind pupils of Range High School, Formby, Merseyside.   The school developed a link with Groupe Scolaire in Shyira, a remote hilltop region in the north west of Rwanda in 2006 through the auspices of St Lukes Church, Formby.  Currently a number of year 10 and 11 pupils are writing to their counterparts at Groupe Scolaire, and there has been an exchange of DVDs so each group can see what each other’s life is like. It was a shock to Range High pupils to see Rwandan pupils jumping through hoops of fire in their end of term show! Not something they plan to do at Range, says headmistress Mrs Mo Miller!   The pupils raised the money for the keyboard through various activities including an end of term mufti day, a collection after the Christmas Carol Service, and staff also put money into the fund in lieu of sending each other Chrtistmas cards. The keyboard was handed over to the delighted Rwandan students on behalf of Range students and staff at a special whole school assembly by Rev Harvie Nicol, vicar of St Lukes, Formby, who visited the country with some of his parishioners.  They were treated to traditional songs and dances and acrobatic displays by students of Group Scolaire. Gervaise, Group Scolaire school administrator said:- “We are happy, we are happy, we are happy!”  whilst the delighted pupils cheered and clapped. In making the presentation Rev Nicol commented on the students singing, joking that they already had music to fill the world. A DVD that showed the purchase of the keyboard in Kigali, Rwanda’s capital, and the presentation presentation has been shown to staff and students at Range so they can see the joy their gift has given.

Transport network to showcase local artists

ARTISTS across Merseyside are being given the chance to showcase their work on Merseytravel’s transport network.

Merseytravel has launched its very first “Art on the Network” competition, allowing talented art lovers to submit their inspired ideas.

The competition aims to boost the environment for passengers and offer a surprise at every corner.

It stems from the legacy of 2008; a year in which the organisation played a key part in the city’s globally-renowned Capital of Culture celebrations.

Neil Scales, Chief Executive and Director General of Merseytravel, said:- “Our public art programme came into its own during European Capital of Culture year and, since then, we have received many requests from talented artists to showcase their work. So we decided to open this up to all of them.

We don’t know what to expect, but that is the appeal of art in all its forms. We are committed to making transport journeys more interesting and appealing.

Merseyside is like an engine for creativity and we are really looking forward to seeing the ideas coming forward.”

Every resident in Merseyside over the age of 18 has the chance to enter.

Artists are asked to submit their own original piece of two-dimensional artwork, which can include painting, pastels, photography or collage.

The artwork should be themed or inspired by the area of Merseyside in which they live, including Knowsley, Liverpool, Sefton, St Helens and Wirral.

A cash prize of £500 is available for a winner from each district of Merseyside. The winners will be judged by Merseytravel and leading professionals from the region’s art community.

Details and submission information is available from:- merseytravel.gov.uk.

Deadline for entries is 30 June 2009.
