Stanley High
School Game & Country Fair
Report by Gudrun Stolzenburg &

THE Game & Country Fair was held
over 28 August to 31 August 2009 at Stanley High School, Banks,
Southport. The Fair was small, but lovely and still had quite
a variety of stalls to offer. The British Red Cross was there to
raise awareness for the importance of being able to give first aid.
Quite a few different art and handicraft stalls were selling their
wares such as jewellery, little horse sculptures and many more. Food
stalls sold cheese, olives and fudges. Of course, there also were
plant stalls and some with garden objects like sculptures made of
hazelnut twigs. A team with Siberian huskies was showing their dogs,
by racing with them with and they also provided information about
their needs; trying to discourage people from buying and then
dumping them. Another team, which organised agility training and
competitions for dogs, had a stall to inform about what they are
doing and raise money for abandoned dogs. The Parkgate Pony
Sanctuary was advertising and raising funds too. In the reptile tent
you could see snakes and lizards and stroke or even hold them.
Also in the fair were a lot of shows. Some of them demonstrated
agricultural work using animals like two Clydesdales in front of a
harrow and by a shepherd who showed how he works his group of dogs
to herd sheep and geese. The exhibitors backed up all of those
displays with informative comments. Other presentations showed
leisure activities such as vaulting and carriage drives by The
Parkgate Pony Sanctuary. A dog organisation had organised different
competitions like the dog with the waggiest tail and the best pup.
It also presented a dog agility show.
A carousel, as well as donkey carriage rides and the exhibition of a
steam vehicle and an old truck, completed the fair.
