MAN MURDERED ON LORD STREET, SOUTHPORT

A murder investigation has been launched after the death of a man on Lord Street, Southport, on Wednesday, 30 December 2009. Merseyside Police have confirmed the identity of the man who was murdered as 47 year old Anthony Johnson from the Southport area. Two men, aged 25 and 24, from the Formby area, who were arrested, earlier, in connection with the incident, remain in police custody for questioning.

Police cordoned off the area on Lord Street just after 4am, on 30 December, after reports of a disturbance on the street led officers to location. Paramedics treated the man at the scene and then took him to hospital by ambulance, where he was confirmed dead upon arrival.

A Home Office Post-mortem is being carried out to establish the cause of death. But, according to reports from some people who live near the murder scene, it is thought that the man was hit in the face with a brick.

A Taxi driver in Southport said:- "Police asked us if we had seen anything as it is near the taxi rank. They later contacted a local taxi firm asking if they had got a job going to Formby, to let them know."

A local licensee, who does not want to be identified told us:- "This is a tragic end to the year. All of us in Southport feel so sorry for the family of the dead man. Southport's night time community is stunned by the news, and at such a time of the year, it is beyond words. We do not know the full story, but from what we have been told, how can people feel safe in a town that has thugs like this? We have done our best to get the town safer and this happens. It is horrific!"

Anyone who witnessed this incident is asked to contact:- 0151 777 3165 or Crimestoppers on:- 0800 555 111.
