Blackpool & District League 2-0 Craven Minor League

Report:- The Under 16’s travelled to Squires Gate to play the Blackpool and District Youth League. The first quarter of an hour was end to end with the Craven Minor side coming close to scoring in the first five minutes and Blackpool unlucky to see a shot come off the top side of the Craven crossbar.

This seemed to spur on the Craven team and within the space of five minutes the Blackpool keeper had to make three important saves. Both keepers played well but with the exception of one full length save the Craven keeper had very little to do in the first half, with the Craven Minor in full control of the midfield and the defence able to deal with anything that got through.

Although Blackpool had a number of skilful players it always looked as though the Craven side would soon take the lead, with several long range shots just over the bar and a couple of chances where the keeper was lobbed and the ball hit the top of the net. Blackpool were lucky to get away with a goal-line scramble just before half time and must have been relieved to go in on equal terms when the whistle blew for the break.

This really was a game of two halves and Blackpool came out for the second half looking the stronger of the two teams. After some pressure they nearly forced a goal when the ball came off a Craven defender’s head and onto the post. They continued to press and fifteen minutes after the restart their number 9, Milton White, placed the ball into the net to take the lead. Despite a concerted effort from the Craven boys, Blackpool broke through the defence again, with White scoring his second of the game and extending the lead.

Continued pressure saw another two Craven Minor shots narrowly go over the Blackpool crossbar. The Blackpool side managed to hold on to their lead despite a final surge from the Craven Minor side and Blackpool being brought down to ten men as a result of one of their players being shown a red card.

The result was disappointing for the boys, especially after their dominance of the first half. Although the result had not gone their way, team manager Robbie Culkin was pleased with the way the boys had played and said that they had done everything that he had asked of them. On another day the same performance could easily have given them a decisive win.
