Prescot Cadets Cash In...

Photograph by Sergeant Instructor Nick Wilkinson
MerseysideArmyCadets.com.

THE Army cadets from the Second Royal Tank Regiment Detachment based in Prescot raised the princely sum of £1,553, for army charities. They helped customers at Tesco in Prescot pack their bags. It was in co-operation with the DORCUS charity at Prescot Community Church. The money goes to army charities for the rehabilitation of injured soldiers and comfort parcels to troops serving abroad. Some money stays local and is funding a Prescot cadet on the Lesotho Tiger Venturer Expedition to South Africa. The cadets give a big ‘thank you’ to everyone who contributed money and to the staff at Tesco for all their help and kindness.

JOBS FOR LOWER SKILLED WORKERS ARE MOVING OUT OF CITY CENTRES

RESEARCH published by the Centre for Cities shows that jobs for low skilled workers are gradually moving out of our city centres. The first in a series of three reports, Moving on up, moving on out?: Overcoming the jobs, skills mismatch, shows that city centre jobs are increasingly made up of those for highly qualified workers, such as accountancy, law and finance; while jobs for lower skilled workers, such as those in telecommunications and transport are locating out of inner city locations.  In parallel to this, the latest data shows that nationally there are about 2.6million more people without qualifications than there are total jobs at this level. This scenario presents real challenges to Work Programme providers as they start to match people to jobs. According to the research institute, over the past 20 years over 60% of all English city centres saw a fall in their regional share of lower skilled jobs. As city centre locations become more costly, some employers are increasingly seeing the benefits of locating out of town, taking advantage of the space available at a lower cost. The report also shows that worklessness continues to be highly concentrated in inner cities. So unemployed people living in urban areas may find it more challenging to access opportunities at the edge of cities as low skilled jobs disperse, particularly as only 52% of the lowest income households own a car. The Centre for Cities is urging the Government and Work Programme providers to take note of these changes to ensure that strategies are developed that will support people to become more mobile so that they are more able to access work. Joanna Averley, Interim Chief Executive of Centre for Cities explains:- "Centre for Cities’ research shows that the make up of the jobs market in our cities is evolving, and this has significant implications for the Work Programme. There are about 2.6million more people without qualifications than there are total jobs at that level. And as more businesses which employ lower skilled workers gradually move out of city centres, it may be more challenging for less qualified people looking for work and living in city centre locations to commute or relocate for jobs.  This long-term trend could have a real impact on people’s ability to access job opportunities at this level. The Government needs to ensure that the Work Programme, launched a month ago, is supported by wider strategies across transport, planning and housing, as well as skills, to anticipate further changes in the geography of low skilled jobs."  Moving on up, moving on out?: Overcoming the jobs – skills mismatch that was published on Wednesday, 6 July 2011.

GOVERNMENT REFUSES TO MAKE LANCASHIRE and MERSEYSIDE'S ROADS SAFER?

NORTH West Euro MP Brian Simpson has criticised the Tory-LibDem government for walking away from new laws that safey campaigners that would have seen a crack down on foreign drivers speeding on Lancashire and Merseyside's roads, on Wednesday, 6 July 2011. Britain is the only EU country refusing to support the new measure, which would allow the UK to crackdown on the estimated 79,000 speeding and red light offences committed annually by foreign motorists on British roads. Brian Simpson, Chair of the European Parliament Transport Committee, has called on the Tory-LibDem government to reconsider its decision and to join the scheme as early as possible. "The UK has always taken a lead on road safety in Europe and I am thoroughly disappointed to see the British government dismissing this important new law. Drivers of non-British vehicles remain free to speed, drink and drive, jump red lights and not wear a seatbelt with limited fear of prosecution. The new European measure makes it possible for governments to share information on road traffic offences and prosecute dangerous drivers in their own country. Across Europe we see other countries cooperating to make their roads safer, but Britain is refusing to act. The Tory-LibDem Government are putting political dogma before people's safety The decision is outrageous if we consider the 79,000 offences committed on UK roads every year by foreign drivers that will now continue to go unpunished." said Simpson. The European Transport Safety Council, which represents the UK's Parliamentary Advisory Council for Transport Safety in Brussels, has joined Mr Simpson in also urging the UK government to "opt-in as soon as possible."
