Did you see this robbery in Aintree?

MERSEYSIDE Police Detectives have released CCTV images of 2 men they would like to speak to in connection with a robbery in Aintree. Officers are investigating following the incident, which happened at the ASDA petrol station at around midnight on Friday, 9 March 2012.   The victim, a 43 year old woman, had just finished putting petrol in her red Volkswagon Polo when she was approached by 2 men who demanded her car keys.   The victim refused to hand over the keys and sustained a hand injury before being pushed to the ground in the struggle. The men drove off in her car in the direction of Ormskirk Road.

The victim was left very distressed and was treated at hospital for the injury to her hand, which needed stitches.  The car was recovered on Fernhill Road, Bootle on Friday, 16 March 2012.

DC Frances Reddin said:- "While the victim was the only person filling her car with petrol at the time of the incident, the store was still open and there were customers coming and going. We appeal to anyone who may have seen this struggle, or the car being driven at any point, to come forward as they may have important information that could help us bring the offenders to justice. We also appeal to the two men pictured in the CCTV to come forward as they may have important information for our investigation."

Anyone with any information is asked to call Merseyside Police on:- 0151 777 3844, or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on:- 0800 555 111.

Libraries Strike Back In Pay Dispute

ON Saturday UNISON members taking strike action closed most Libraries across West Cheshire, including Chester, Ellesmere Port, Winsford and Northwich. The action is part of the on-going fight against Cheshire West and Chester Council’s imposition of cuts to terms and conditions.  Efforts by management to get staff from other departments to strike-break, so that libraries could be opened, collapsed in failure on Friday, having infuriated Librarians.  "The Council knew that staff would be striking a week ago. Because of management efforts to break the strike the public were not told until Friday afternoon. This meant many people turned up at the closed libraries." said Teresa Connally, UNISON Branch Secretary.

"The public have been very supportive of Library staff. They took our leaflets explaining about the cuts to terms and conditions and hundreds signed our petition for Fair Pay."
said Ray McHale, UNISON Assistant Branch Secretary.

From 2 April 2012, the Council is removing all weekend enhancements, as well as those paid on most bank holidays and for overtime. It is also reducing the enhancement for night working and cutting the car allowances of 900 staff by around £1500 per year, while contractually requiring them to provide a car for work.  On Wednesday staff began refusing to use their personal cars for work in protest over the car allowance cuts.  Library staff, who mainly work every other Saturday morning, will face an effective pay cut of at least 5%. They are the first to take selective strike action, striking for two Saturdays, 24 March and 31 March 2012. Other staff, especially low paid care staff face pay reductions of 10% to 15%. More industrial action is now planned by other staff affected by the cuts to their payments for working unsocial hours.

Lighting solutions for Switch Island

WORK to improve the reliability of lighting around a key traffic interchange in Merseyside has been taking place; with a second project starting soon.

A £190,000 project to resolve a long-running problem with the maintenance of overhead lighting along the A5036 at Switch Island Interchange began in February and should be completed by Friday, 30 March 2012.

And a second, £500,000 project to overhaul lighting at the interchange; which also serves the Highways Agency’s M58 and M57 motorways as well as the A59 local road into north Liverpool; will begin in May.

The overnight work along the A5036 started on February 20 and should provide a lasting solution to the reliability of lighting in the area which has concerned local people. Access to the lighting below live power cables in the area has hampered the Highways Agency’s efforts to repair broken lighting in the past but new, mid-hinged, lighting columns, complete with new lamps, are being installed to enable them to be lowered for safer access and maintenance works.

The second, month-long, project, due to be completed in June 2012, will improve the reliability of lighting along the eastbound and westbound carriageways of the M58 where they meet the interchange. This involves an overhaul of services to the columns.

The work will be taking place during the day with single lane closures on the M58 as well as a 50mph speed limit on the westbound carriageway and a 40mph speed limit on the eastbound. There will also be some overnight lane closures on the westbound carriageway to enable the work to be completed.

Highways Agency project sponsor Peter Gee said:- "Both these projects will enhance the reliability of lighting around this key Merseyside junction. We are particularly pleased to be resolving the issue of providing safe maintenance access for our contractors to the lighting along the A5036 onto Switch Island as we know the reliability of lighting there has concerned some local people for some time."
