Scarewood Forest, Did You Go?
Photographs by Patrick Trollope.

THIS year Shiverpool took up residence in Formby Pinewoods for Halloween and is set to become the hottest scare attraction for 2013 on the back of the 2012 event! Despite the weather, Formby's famous Pinewoods, at the back of Shorrocks Hill, was changed into an exciting new scare attraction for an amazing week.   This is very different to many of the indoor attractions and the dark woods aloud for some very terrifying thrills. Noticeably, indoor events are not as affected to weather, and October is often a bit cold, windy and wet, but oddly adds to its attraction.   In fact the creaking limbs and the space that this event has makes you feel uneasy, add theatre equipment and special effects, the cold and damp... Well you have a very creepy and unique attraction!  Some said it remind them of the X-Files and others of the Blur Witch Project.   At times you could hear the strange, brooding sounds echoing around the sand dunes, so you did not need to be at the attraction to get a fright.   As the mischievous fairies, monsters, ghouls and demons ran amok, it was interesting that sound levels were kept at a sensible level.   it was also fantastic to see that nearly all those attending respected the residents in the area and kept quite when leaving and entering the area.

As this was the first year, we popped over to see what was on offer.  We have to say, the market offing hot food and scary cakes, did have the most delicious home made mushroom soup, from a shop in Liverpool City Centre.

Before heading around we took a look at the games on offer and the static entertainment that included a young lady in a table, pumpkin carving, apple bobbing and more.

The attraction offered 3 levels of fear, starting with the children's event, then slightly later on, it gradually got more frightening, ending the night with the most scary activities.  We where also impressed by all the cast, as some of them stood exceptionally still, for hours, in the cold, with very thin clothing on, just to give you a fright!

After going round we have to admit we also sampled the food on offer, it after we had been recommended to try by a lot of the punters who spoke to us.

We decided to rate this attraction as 4˝ out of 5 bones. We nearly gave it 5 bones, but it has some room for improvement.

From what we did see, mind you, if they do run it again, and we hope they do, it will be a must see attraction for next October!  Lets hope it gets bigger and better next year!   Well done to all the group who put it on...  A fantastic new addition to the Merseyside event calendar!   We look forward to seeing it back in 2013!!!
