CHRISTMAS DRINK AND DRUG DRIVE CAMPAIGN - DECEMBER 2013

THE Tate Liverpool is the home of the national collection of modern art in the north and has attracted 15 million visitors since opening in 1988. If you did not already know, the gallery hosts a diverse and lively special exhibitions and events programme, and displays work from the national collection free of charge.  This Christmas, visitors are invited to family event The Great Festive Family Escape on Friday, 27 December 2013 to Sunday 29 December 2013, also on Thursday, 2 January 2014 to Saturday 4 January 2014. Inspired by Mary Martin's Inversions 1966, currently on display in the DLA Piper Series - Constellations, families can create their own reflective collages. In the New Year and throughout 2014 visitors can also enjoy an exciting exhibitions programme starting in the spring with Keywords:- Art, Culture and Society in 1980s Britain, an exhibition which is based on Raymond Williams' study of the vocabulary of culture and society.  For the gallery's summer season visitors can look forward to Mondrian and his Studios:-  Abstraction into his World which provides fresh insights into Mondrian's practice and explores his relationship with architecture and urbanism. To round up the year Tate Liverpool's autumn/winter season will present Transmitting Andy Warhol, the first exhibition of Warhol's work in the north of England.  In addition, the public can continue to explore DLA Piper Series:- Constellations featuring more than one hundred works from the Tate collection, including pieces by Picasso, Pollock and Matisse. Furthermore visitors can participate in the wide range of activities, workshops and talks on offer.
 

2014 SPECIAL EXHIBITIONS
KEYWORDS - ART, CULTURE AND SOCIETY IN 1980S BRITAIN
28 February 2014 to 11 May 2014	Tate Liverpool in partnership with Iniva (Institute of International Visual Arts) presents Keywords, an exhibition based on Raymond Williams' study, of the same name, about the vocabulary of culture and society. The exhibition, spanning a twenty year period from the 1st publication of the book, Keywords, in 1976, through the period of Conservative rule, has a strong focus on British art of the 1980s. In a space designed by artist Luca Frei and designer Will Holder, it will include works by artists including Helen Chadwick, Rita Donagh, Elizabeth Frink, Stephen McKenna, Donald Rodney and Jo Spence.

MONDRIAN AND HIS STUDIOS - ABSTRACTION INTO THE WORLD
6 June to 5 October 2014	Dutch painter Piet Mondrian (1872 to 1944) was one of the most important contributors to the development of abstract art at the beginning of the 20th Century. Mondrian and his Studios which commemorates the 70th anniversary of the artist's death, provides fresh insights into Mondrian's practice and explores his relationship with architecture and urbanism. The exhibition will feature a diverse group of major abstract works and considers not only Mondrian's importance in the field of abstraction, but also the relationship between his iconic artworks and the space around them.

NASREEN MOHAMEDI
6 June to 5 October 2014	The exhibition will run in parallel with Nasreen Mohamedi. Indian artist Nasreen Mohamedi (1937 to 1990) is considered to be one of the most significant artists within the modernist tradition. This will be the largest solo exhibition of Mohamedi's work in the UK. Born in Karachi and raised in Mumbai, Mohamedi studied art in London (1954 to 57) and worked in an atelier in Paris (1961 to 63) before returning to Mumbai where she became part of an abstractionist milieu. The exhibition will bring together different strands of a practice that encompassed drawing, painting and photography. Archival material will provide links to the varied influences that informed her art, from Islamic and modern architecture to the desert and the Arabian Sea. The exhibition will run in parallel with Mondrian and his Studios.

TRANSMITTING ANDY WARHOL
7 November 2014 to 8 February 2015	This is the first exhibition to explore Andy Warhol's (1928 to 1987) role in expanding the networks of artistic dissemination, and his enablement of new approaches to art reception that redefined artistic practice. The first exhibition of Warhol's work in the north of England, Transmitting Andy Warhol brings together over 100 artworks from Tate's collection as well as from collections across the world. Including major paintings, films, drawings, prints and photographs, augmented by a display of documentation, the exhibition rethinks Warhol's pivotal role in re-defining the access to culture and art as we know it today.

DLA PIPER SERIES - CONSTELLATIONS
On until summer 2014	DLA Piper Series:- Constellations features more than one hundred works, many never seen before at Tate Liverpool and takes a fresh look at the links between artworks across time and location of origin. Constellations examines the role of nine 'trigger' artworks displayed within groups or 'constellations' of other artworks from many periods in art history. The 'trigger' works have been chosen because of their continuous and revolutionary effect on modern and contemporary art. Highlights include Pablo Picasso's Bowl of Fruit, Violin and Bottle 1914, Marina Abramovic's Rhythm 0 1974 and The Inattentive Reader 1919 by Henri Matisse.

REMODELLING DISPARITY - A COLLECTIVE REMODELLING DROP IN WORKSHOP
Thursday 12 December 2013 13.00 to 16.00	Visitors are invited to join local artist Allie Rutherford in The Office of Useful Art for a collective remodelling drop-in workshop. In response to Art Turning Left, participants will use simple materials to create 3D models to show current global disparities considering inequalities in wealth, resource consumption and labour-force. FILM SCREENING - SPIRIT OF THE BEEHIVE 1973
Friday, 10 January 2014 14.00 to 16.00	First in this series is Spirit of the Beehive (Víctor Erice, 1973) presented by Dr Tom Whittaker, Lecturer in Film Studies and Hispanic Studies from the University of Liverpool. This controversial Spanish film was made during the last years of the Franco regime, and was the first to address the social reality of Spain after the Civil War. The film centres on Ana, a young girl, who on discovering a fugitive Republican soldier, believes him to be the spirit of Frankenstein.
FILM SCREENING - JONAS QUI AURA 25 ANS DANS L'AN 2000 1975
Wednesday, 15 January 2014 14.00 to 16.00	Second in this series is Jonas qui aura 25 ans dans l'an 2000 (Ian Tanner, 1975) presented by Dr Alison Smith, Lecturer in Film Studies and French from The University of Liverpool. A group of survivors of the social and political turmoil of May 1968 in France, determined one way or another to keep the flame alive, cope with their problematic ideals and their relationships and try to start an alternative community. This 'political comedy' represents one of the most accessible and original fruits of the collaboration between Swiss director Tanner and British writer John Berger.
FILM SCREENING - CORAZÓN DEL TIEMPO (HEART OF TIME) 2009
Thursday, 16 January 2014 14.00 to 16.00	3rd in this series is Corazón del tiempo (Heart of Time) (Alberto Cortés, 2009) presented by Dr Niamh Thornton, Senior Lecturer in Hispanic Studies and Film Studies from the University of Liverpool. Corazón del tiempo (Heart of Time) is set in the southern Mexican state of Chiapas amidst the low-level war that has been ongoing since 1994. This heart warming love story tells of the everyday difficulties and tensions that arise when living in a terrain beset by conflict.
FILM SCREENING - BICYCLE THIEVES 1948
Wednesday, 22 January 2014 14.00 to 16.00	4th in this series is Bicycle Thieves (Vittorio de Sica, 1948) presented by Dr Tiago de Luca, Lecturer in World Cinema, from the University of Liverpool. Directed by Vittorio de Sica and written by Cezare Zavattini, Bicycle Thieves (1948) stands as a cornerstone of a social realist tradition in world cinema. Its deceptively simple story of a man in search of his bicycle through the streets of a war-ravaged Rome captures the essence of its time and remains a poignant cinematic plea for social equality.
