Communities set to benefit
from Commissioner's fund
YOUNGSTERS in Preston's Fishwick area
will have the chance to get sporty during a "Festival of Fun"
thanks to Lancashire's Police and Crime Commissioner.
Preston Pirates is one of three organisations which has had its application to
the Commissioner's Community Action Fund approved by Police and Crime
Commissioner Clive Grunshaw, alongside the Larches and Savick PACT Partnership
and Adlington based Freestyle Urban Soccer.
And the organisation plans to use its £2000 grant to fund a 15 week activity
scheme in Fishwick Community Park, allowing youngsters aged 12 to 18, to take
part in sports ranging from dodge-ball to football and netball on Friday and
Saturday nights.
The Fishwick area experiences high levels of anti-social behaviour, and Preston
Pirates hopes this scheme will reduce problems for other local residents by
providing up to 40 teenagers a weekend with organised, free activities.
The funding will contribute towards the cost of two multi-sports coaches, and
the £3000 project is also being supported by Lancashire County Council, Preston
Community Safety Partnership, Youth Addaction and the local Neighbourhood
Policing Team.
Youngsters in Adlington are also set to benefit from free Saturday evening
activities through Freestyle Urban Soccer's Urban Skate Project on the area's
new skate park.
The Commissioner has approved a grant of £2464 toward the 12 week scheme, which
will give the area's youngsters the chance to take part in BMXing, scootering
and skateboarding free of charge between 6pm to 9pm.
That funding will contribute toward experienced staff supervising activities on
the park and engaging with the young people to help them achieve positive
outcomes.
Finally, Larches and Savick PACT Partnership has been awarded £1250 towards the
cost of upgrading the CCTV equipment which monitors shops and businesses in the
area. The Commissioner said:- "Community groups and voluntary
organisations do vital work across Lancashire which supports my Police and Crime
Plan priorities and helps make their neighbourhoods' better, safer places to
live. In particular, anti-social behaviour can have a severely detrimental
impact on residents, and I am delighted to be able to support two organisations
working to tackle that by providing fun, structured activities for youngsters.
Small grants can make a really positive difference to organisations, and I am
committed to continuing to offer these to help communities have a positive
impact on their own areas."

Person struck by Train
A person was struck by a train between
Ainsdale and Hillside on 10 February 2015 at around 19:55. All services were
cancelled from Formby and from Southport for the rest of that day. Arriva then
started accepting, as a temporary measure, train tickets between Formby and
Southport, to help stranded passengers. A British Transport Police spokesman
said:- "Our officers were called to Hillside railway station, Southport,
at around 7.55pm, following reports of a person being struck by a train.
Colleagues from North West Ambulance Service also attended, but a 37 year old
man, from the Southport area, was pronounced dead at the scene. The incident is
not being treated as suspicious, and a file will be prepared for the coroner."

'Czech-in' at LJLA announces new flights to Prague
CZECH Airlines, a member of the global
SkyTeam Alliance, has announced that it is to commence a twice weekly scheduled
service from Liverpool john Lennon Airport (LJLA) to Prague, the capital of The
Czech Republic, starting in May 2015. Liverpool will become the airline's
only UK destination and is one of a number of new European routes announced by

Charity was awarded £500,000
TEAM members at Mecca Southport are
celebrating after helping to raise a whopping £500,000 for the charity Carers
Trust. The partnership between the charity and the Rank Group, which owns
Mecca and Grosvenor Casinos, began in February 2014 and saw the Lord Street club
take part in a host of different activities to raise much needed funds.
Throughout the year team members at the club have organised a whole host of
fundraising events, from 24/7 challenges to the most recent:- 'Wear Your
Onesie' to work day, as well as going the extra mile by giving their
time as volunteers to support local Carers Trust Network Partners. Brian
Hennigan, general manager at Mecca Southport, said:- "It's a sobering
thought to think that three out of five of us will become carers at some point
in our lives. I'd like to say a massive thanks to our team members and
kind-hearted customers who have helped raise such a fantastic amount of money
for Carers Trust. There are no words to describe the importance of what these
carers do in our community, and it's an honour to know how much we've been able
to help make life that little bit easier for some of the unpaid carers in our
area who could easily go unnoticed and unsupported." Dr Moira
Fraser, interim chief executive of Carers Trust, said:- "Team members and
customers at Mecca Southport should be very proud of what they have achieved.
Thanks to them, we have been able to award the highest amount in direct grants
to carers we have ever made in any one year, providing over 1,000 carers with
respite breaks, essential equipment such as washing machines and the chance to
