Spring blooms for Southport
retirees
SOUTHPORT retirees and their families
came together to celebrate the beginning of the new season last Saturday, at a
spring Inspiration Day at McCarthy and Stone's development, Brunlees Court.
The free event, which took place at the Assisted Living development on Cambridge
Road, really captured the imagination of local people, who were able to enjoy
the beautiful flower arranging demonstrations from interior designer, Beverley
Love. Guests were also invited to experience the wonderful food tasting by
CaterPlus Chef, Ian Sankey, as well as an array of delicious cakes and savory
snacks on offer.

Halfords Southport joins up with Big Bike
Revival and offers FREE bike servicing
HALFORDS Southport is calling on customers to dust off
forgotten bikes and bring them in store for a free service, worth £15*, and £5
off parts and accessories, to call for more people to take summer journeys on
their bikes and rediscover a love of cycling.
On Tuesday 26 and Thursday, 28 May 2015, your local Halfords store is supporting the
Big Bike Revival, a national campaign brought to you by the CTC, the national
cycling charity, aimed at getting thousands of forgotten bikes out of garden
sheds and back on the roads.
Halfords' Community and CSR Manager, Emma Thomas, said:- "There are lots
of forgotten bikes hidden away that, with a service and some TLC, will give a
summer of great cycling, helping make memories and inspiring a love of cycling
for years to come."
Halfords YouGov Journeys Report has shown that the cycling trend is set to
increase this summer, with 14% of people cycling more than they did 12 months
ago, and 18% cycling more than once a month.**
Olympic Cycling Champion Chris Boardman MBE, said:- "With summer almost
upon us, there's really no better time to put a new lease of life into an old,
dusty bike and get out into the fresh air on two wheels. Whether you're aiming

City looks set to 'walk'
world record attempt
FROM canines to carers, brownies to
belly dancers and hockey players to hospice workers; Liverpool is well on its
way to breaking a world record in July. The Very Big Catwalk, in
association with Very.co.uk, will take over the Pier Head on Saturday, 4 July
2015, as
Liverpool hosts Transatlantic 175, a celebration of the city's culture and its
links with America.
The event is attempting to smash the Guinness World Record for 'most models
on a catwalk' – with Mexico City currently holding the title since November
2013 with 3,083 participants. With less than 2 months to go, Liverpool is
on course to break the record with more than 2,500 signed up to take part.
Just some of the confirmed participants are:-
► 2 roller derby teams from the Liverpool Roller Birds and the Wirral Whipiteres
Roller Derby.
► Guides (aged 10 to 14), Brownies (aged 7 to 10),
Rainbows (aged 5 to 7) and Seniors (aged 14 to 26).
► Pawabella – a local business offering luxury
clothing and accessories for dogs of all sizes.
► The Chinese Pagoda Centre.
► A hockey club from Formby.
► Japanese Subculture Fashion – a nod to
Japanese street fashion.
► The City of Liverpool College which will see
300 students taking part.
► Singing Our Socks Off Choir.
► Empire Street Dance Company.
But the team want even more groups to get involved such as rugby and American
football teams, cheerleaders, body builders, gospel choirs, brass bands, bowling
clubs, Morris dancers, dance troupes and jockey or pony clubs – all are welcome!
And it's not just groups - hundreds of individuals have also signed up to take
part in the categories:-

Here Comes the Bride - Brides and bridesmaids will get a second chance to walk
down the aisle.
► Black is the New Black – This is all about
showcasing that Little Black Dress and tuxedo.
► Fitness Fanatics – Lycra, shorts, trainers –
all are welcome in this category.
► Mirror Image – The audience will see double as
twins take to the catwalk.
► Schools out for Summer – Prom comes to the
Pier Head to add even more glamour to the occasion.
► Tats and Beards – Quite simply, tattoos and
facial hair are required.
► Festival Folk – Dedicated to that laid-back
festival vibe – but not a bit of mud in sight.
► Aintree Ladies Day – Expect fascinators,
killer heels and dresses to impress.
► Vintage Best in Show – Representing the best
of vintage glamour.
The Transatlantic 175 weekend is curated by Creative Director Wayne Hemingway
MBE, with the world record attempt organised by Culture Liverpool and hosted in
partnership with Liverpool-based online retail giant Very.co.uk.
Renowned TV and live event fashion producer Jane Galpin from BBC's Clothes Show
and Channel 4 shows such as How to Look Good Naked will help coordinate the
mammoth catwalk show and Lindsey Hunt will direct and choreograph the event.
Wayne Hemingway MBE, said:- "When we announced the catwalk back in
February we knew that the people of Liverpool, and indeed Merseyside, would rise
to the challenge. When Jane and I started discussing the concept for the
catwalk, I wanted it to be a celebration of Liverpool and its diverse
communities. Regardless of age, sex or background; I want people to be proud to
strut their stuff and let the world see what an amazing melting pot of cultures
Liverpool is. Looking at all the different groups and individuals taking
part is massively exciting and without a doubt the 4th July is going to be a
spectacle not to be missed. But we're not quite there yet and need more people
to sign up - so get your application in today and let's make sure that Liverpool
grabs that world record from Mexico City."

Angel Thomas is the 12 year old brains behind Pawabella and will be holding an
online doggie pageant to find 25 'pawsome' pets to take the lead on the catwalk.
"As soon as I heard about the catwalk I wanted to get involved and am
really pleased that for a few minutes it will become a dogwalk! Using my
Facebook page, I'll be looking for 25 dogs; large and small; to become models
for the day. It'll be a great experience and I can't wait to be part of it."
Local success story Cutthroatpete, which is now one of the leading barber's in
Liverpool, have taken on the beards and tats challenge and are going to recruit
as many models as possible. Owner Pete Cranfield said:- "I am really
pleased to be invited to help with such a massive production for our fantastic
City and to work on an event being produced by Wayne Hemingway and Jane Galpin
is really exciting. Cutthroatpete's Barber Store has a strong connection with
beards, tattoos and fashion so when the opportunity arose to be involved, I
jumped at it. I am heading up the 'Beards and Tats' section of the Catwalk for
which I will use my contacts, customers and social media to recruit a strong
looking gang. I will be supplying some beard grooming prior to the event and
giving special, limited edition, Cutthroatpete t-shirts to some participants of
the 'Beards and Tats' group. I'm excited to help smash that World Record for
most models on a catwalk!"
There will be more than 50 Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and Seniors taking to the
catwalk. Sarah Evans is the guider in charge of 445th Liverpool St brownies and
guides. She said:- "We're doing it as it's a chance to be part of an
iconic event which is fun and at the same showcases Girlguiding. Girlguiding has
strong links with community so it's great to do this by all joining forces City
wide. Most importantly Girlguiding is all about giving girls fun and amazing
experiences; I couldn't think of a better way than them joining in with the very
big catwalk and they're determined to help break the record!"
Transatlantic 175 forms part of the seven week One Magnificent City programme of
events - celebrating Liverpool's internationally renowned maritime history and
transatlantic links. It begins on Friday, 15 May 2015, with the cultural celebration
that is LightNight and runs until the 5 July 2015. Throughout the 7 weeks
various activities will be held which mark the 175th anniversary of Cunard.
