Charity's corner ahead of title fight
WORLD title fighter Derry Mathews
has been training with a very special sparring partner ahead of his fight
for the WBO world lightweight title later in March (2016). The 32 year old Liverpudlian went toe to toe with Roy of the Royal, the
mascot of the Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospitals NHS
Trust's R Charity, as he lends his support to their £10million Appeal for
the new Royal.
A long term supporter and ambassador for R Charity, Derry has backed them to
raise their £10million target to provide patients and their loved ones with
added comfort when in Hospital.
Derry invited Roy along to his Boxing Academy in Vauxhall, as he prepares
for his title fight with Mancunian Terry Flanagan and after a friendly spar,
presented Roy with 5 pairs of tickets to R Charity for his upcoming fight
in the ACC Liverpool on Saturday, 12 March 2016.
The 5 pairs of tickets, kindly donated by boxing promoter Frank Warren, will
be put up for a silent auction with tickets won by the highest silent
bidder.
Derry said:- "I grew up over the road from the hospital so I thought
it would be a good idea to help them raise some cash.
The plans for the new Hospital look great and I wanted to help make sure the
patients treated there have access to the best equipment possible."
Ged Carter, head of fundraising engagement for R Charity, said:- "This
is a massive night for boxing in Liverpool, and we couldn't be prouder to
have Derry as an ambassador for R Charity.
Support from the sports stars and fans across the City really makes a
difference to R Appeal. It'll be amazing to have a world champion as a

his upcoming fight."

Merseyside Police
Officers receive an international award for uncovering thefts
MERSEYSIDE Police Officers from
Vehicle Crime Group have been received an international award for helping to
uncover the large scale theft of plant machinery. Back in October 2015 the
DVLA raised concerns over the authenticity of a vehicle registration
certificate for a forklift truck, a JCB Telehander, in St Helens, as it
appeared that the vehicle was already registered in Northern Ireland. The
DVLA asked Merseyside Police to carry out enquiries to establish the true
identity of the machinery.
Constable Chris Kelleher and vehicle examiner Geoff McKeown were allocated
the enquiry and the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) were asked to
inspect the truck in Northern Ireland, which turned out to be legitimate.
Enquiries by the Merseyside Police Team then established that the truck in
St Helens was an outstanding stolen vehicle. Additional enquiries revealed
the same company had bought more plant machinery, which also turned out to
be stolen. It emerged that the company who had supplied them had bought them
together with approximately 14 other machines from a London based company.
The Plant and Agriculture National Intelligence Unit (PANIU) took over the
enquiry and warrants were executed at the London premises where a number of
organised crime groups were arrested.
Enquires are currently ongoing. However it's believed that stolen machinery
worth in excess of £1.5 million has had its identity altered and
subsequently sold by the London company.
Merseyside Police's Vehicle Crime Group were awarded the:- 'Peter Leigh
Plant Award' by the International Association of Auto Theft Investigators (IAATI)
which is presented to an:- "individual, group, association or company
who have shown distinction in the Investigation, prevention or detection of
plant theft."
Sergeant David Williams from Merseyside Police said:- "The IAATI have
recognised the diligent and professional manner in which the Vehicle Crime
Group has investigated the incident, working closely with our partners to
break up a major source of stolen plant equipment."

Get active for
International Women's Day
HUNDREDS of women are being encouraged to get active at a special event in Liverpool, on Tuesday, 8 March
2016, to mark International Women's Day.
Taking place at St George's Hall from 10am to 11am, a team from the City's
Lifestyles Centres will be giving ten minute taster sessions of activities
including Zumba, circuit training, Boxercise, badminton and Metafit which is
a high intensity interval training session.
Working in partnership with the This Girl Can campaign, the aim of the free
event is to celebrate active females and to encourage those who don't do any
activity to try something new.
The most recent Active People Survey revealed that in Liverpool just 15% of
women take part in sport and active recreation for 30 minutes, 3 times a
week. This is compared to 29% of men; highlighting the considerable gap
between the sexes.
Throughout the session in the Great Hall, the qualified instructors will
also be on hand to give advice about taking up an exercise and answer any
questions people may have.
Anyone interested in taking part can register their attendance by calling:-
0151 794 0984, or people can just drop in at 10am on the day, although
pre-registration is recommended to avoid disappointment. Those taking part
are advised to wear comfortable clothing and flat shoes, preferably
trainers, if possible.
Assistant Mayor and cabinet member responsible for sport and leisure,
Councillor Wendy Simon, said:- "This event is all about inspiring and
encouraging women to get active. There are many reasons why some people
don't take up exercise, and lacking confidence is a major factor. We want to
debunk any myths, and talk about the obvious health benefits of taking up a
fitness activity, along with the social side which can really boost self
esteem and create a whole new network of friends for people. The This Girl
Can campaign and International Women's Day are both so empowering; they have
really strong, positive messages and I hope we can attract as many females
as possible to come along and have a go at the taster sessions and hopefully
make exercise part of their regular routine."
The event is being organised in partnership with BBC Radio Merseyside. This
Girl Can is a national campaign developed by Sport England.

This Girl Can is 1 of the key campaigns within Liverpool's Physical
Activity and Sport Strategy 2014 to 2021, which sets out the vision for Liverpool
to be the most active core City, in England by 2021.
The Strategy was developed by the City Council in partnership with a wide
range of strategic stakeholders, to address inactivity levels across the
city, particularly amongst groups experiencing health inequalities. The City
Council is working in partnership with Liverpool Clinical Commissioning
Group (LCCG) and Sport England to provide resources to deliver the
strategy's key campaigns and programmes. Physical activity is the key
element of LCCG's Healthy Liverpool Programme.
