TREADING THE BOARDS AT PIER EVENT
Report with thanks to Julia Brough

LOCAL performers will be treading the boards later this month when they will treat visitors to Southport pier with entertainment from Broadway musicals.

Sefton Arts Development and Sefton Youth Theatre will be performing songs and dance from hit musicals while Mrs. Pickles, straight from pantomime at the Southport Arts Centre, will be welcoming visitors to the pier.

On Bank Holiday Monday (May 26th) the entertainers will be giving three half-hourly performances from shows including Greece, Summertime Special, Little Shop of Horrors, Guys and Dolls, Adrian Mole and excerpts from the sell-out pantomime Dick in a Pickle.

Sefton’s Tourism Department is delighted with the popularity of the new-look Pier and expects the event to attract even more visitors to the resort this Bank Holiday. Nearly 400,000 people have visited the pier since it re-opened just over a year ago following a £7 million restoration programme.

Lord Fearn, Sefton’s Cabinet Member for Economic Development and Tourism, said:- “Visitors strolling along the pier this coming Bank Holiday Monday will be able to enjoy three spectacular shows of song and dance with the performers all dressed stunning, bright costumes. Mrs Pickles will also be on hand throughout the afternoon to entertain members of the family. The event will be a real celebration of some of the best musicals and will be great entertainment for all the family.”

The performances have been organised in conjunction with Top Ten Entertainment, with choreography from Sharn Alexander and direction from Susie Walker.

Mrs Pickles will be welcoming visitors to the pier from 12 noon and the performances will take place at 1pm, 2.30pm and 4pm. Visitors to the pier on the Sunday (May 25th) will also get a sneak preview of the show when the performers will be rehearsing from 12 noon.

THE VAGINA MONOLOGUES
NATIONAL TOUR SPRING 2003

DIRECT FROM A SELL OUT AUTUMN TOUR
BRITAIN’S FUNNIEST AND SEXIEST SHOW
Starring Anita Dobson and Jean Boht
One More Amazing Woman to be
Announced Soon...

THE Vagina Monologues, having wowed audiences around the country in the autumn of 2002, continues on its trip round Britain throughout the spring of 2003. The ultimate girl’s night out is coming to the Liverpool Empire Theatre for one week only from Monday 16 – Saturday 21 June

Sex has never been funnier or more poignant than in this collection of highly original stories gathered by the show’s dynamic creator, New Yorker Eve Ensler. Ensler asked over 200 women of all ages, ethnic backgrounds and walks of life to share their most intimate secrets in ‘vagina interviews’ on such normally taboo topics as birth, sex, orgasms and relationships with truly revelatory results.

The Vagina Monologues has been critically applauded, receiving prestigious nominations for Drama Desk and Obie awards in 1999 in New York and a nomination for the 2002 Olivier Award for Best Entertainment. The show is a global phenomenon with multiple productions in over 25 countries and open-ended runs in New York and Paris.

As sharp and witty as Sex and the City, as unmissable as Friends and as funny as Smack the Pony, the show is performed by three amazing women who appear on stage together throughout the evening. Some of the world’s most successful women have taken part in The Vagina Monologues around the world including Kate Winslet, Glenn Close, Gillian Anderson, Whoopi Goldberg, Mel B, Calista Flockhart, Dannii Minogue, Ruby Wax, Lisa Stansfield, Jerry Hall, Sophie Dahl, Mariella Frostrup, Honor Blackman, and Maureen Lipman.

Every performance of The Vagina Monologues will donate a percentage of the ticket price to the Liverpool Women’s and Children’s Aid Centre, ‘Centre 56’, a charitable organisation that provides refuge for up to 19 families escaping domestic violence. Centre 56 is currently celebrating 30 years of helping women and as well as providing refuge for abused women offers a service that includes counselling, advice on housing and a 24 hour help line - 0151 727 1355. Since May 2001, The Vagina Monologues has donated in excess of £100,000 to local charities.

The Vagina Monologues is at the Liverpool Empire Theatre for one week only, from Monday 16 – Saturday 21 June. Tickets are available from Ticketmaster on 0870 606 3536, subject to booking
