David Mach's '2 Twisted' art installation opens at Chester Cathedral

Renowned artist David Mach has created a brand-new art installation at Chester Cathedral.

A pair of Triumph convertible cars, 2 giant shipping containers and tonnes of newsprint are the key elements of the sculptor's latest work, which is open, to the public, until 20 May 2019. The exhibition is free to enter attraction during normal Cathedral opening hours.

Scottish sculptor David Mach lived up to his reputation for creating art on an epic scale as he officially unveiled his latest work at Chester Cathedral during an exclusive preview event.

His new installation; created over a 7 day period in front of the general public; is called:- '2 Twisted' and features a pair of Triumph convertibles, 2 giant shipping containers and multiple tonnes of newsprint, all housed in Chester's historic City Cathedral.

More than 130 people attended the launch event with Mach working until the final moments to finish the work, assisted by a team of students and his brother to ensure the installation was ready in time.

Renowned artist David Mach has created a brand-new art installation at Chester Cathedral.

Funding from The Megan Gwynne Jones Charitable Trust has made the exhibition possible and Clive Pointon, who is the Trust's Chairman and also heads up the Wills, Trusts and Tax team at Chester based law firm Aaron and Partners, said:- "We were thrilled to have David Mach back in Chester and his 2 Twisted installation did not disappoint; it truly is a remarkable piece of work. 1 of the Trust's key objectives is to make art and culture as accessible to the public as possible. Being able to showcase someone like David, who is internationally recognised for his work, is something we're exceptionally proud of. The exhibition will be in place until late May, so I'd urge people to take the time to see his work in all its glory. It looks fantastic against the historic surroundings of Chester Cathedral."

David Mach is a member of the Royal Academy of Arts (RA) and former Turner Prize nominee and has previously showcased his work in Chester Cathedral; the Golgotha trilogy and as part of the ARK exhibition in 2017, where he created:- 'Vessel' that is a carved out vase, encrusted with 2 million nails.

Dean of Chester, The Very Revd Dr Tim Stratford, said:- "The launch event was a huge success and we were delighted to play host to so many people, all of whom were eager to see what David had created. We're proud to have 2 Twisted here at Chester Cathedral and the installation is part of 'waves,' an extraordinary year of special events centred around the theme of water; seeking to provoke thought about how we care for and abuse the world God has given us."
