ONE OF AMERICA'S finest heavy blues-rock bands graced the final date of Liverpool's summer pops with possibly the greatest rock event to have arrived in Liverpool to date.
The Texan outfit coolly walked on stage looking comfortably at home with the surroundings of the tent ostensibly bathing in the surroundings of a childhood dream of running away to the circus after delivering an old favourite Gimme all your lovin'.
Not normally known for their fancy outfits, the crowd were treated to a 'fancy' ZZ top as the singer put it, for the first three songs as their Mexican fashion sense of ponchos and sombreros outstripped any previous act of couture seen at the event, which saw a motor of old favourites that included 'Precious and Grace' - one of the highlights of the Beer drinkers and Hell raisers tour - continuing their brand of 30 year old rock brew.
Unusually the turnout was not as expected as the city perhaps was suffering pop's syndrome with the overkill of concerts concentrated in one month. But if the event was a litmus test for the future concerts and the promise of a stadium within the city stirring the denizens of Liverpool in the face, reasons profile for bands to come to Liverpool could never have been more justified.
