Letters to the Editor:- "Flooding due to blocked road drains"

"HOW many people have seen Sefton Council out cleaning drains? When I was a kid, we could see them doing drain cleaning throughout the year. Pumping each small grate drain covered, at the edge of our local roads, opening them up and removing letter and leaves, but now this is a very seldom sight. Sadly this now rarely seen activity is leading to growing problems and causing concern. For example the drains on my road in Formby have not been cleaned in ages. I can only remove the leaves and litter on the top of the drain, but not the build up of silt and other detritus that has fallen in to it. Keeping road drains and gullies clean and maintained them not only helps to prevent flooding, but also keeps costs down in the long run. I pay my Council Tax, so why should I cleaning leaves from the drains in front of my house? I'm told that Sefton aims aim to clean these drainage systems on an annual basis in problem areas. How long will it be before our area becomes a problem area due to the drainage provisions not being professionally cleaned? I agree that problems can happen, even when drains are clean and well maintained. But regular clearing of our local road grids will allow the water to flow and prevent local flooding. It will also help reduce bigger bills in the end, when we get carriageway collapses and flooded homes and businesses. Not only that, but we see all over Sefton missing manhole covers. Please start clearing and pumping the grids to allow the water to flow and prevent local flooding along with blockages that lead to carriageway collapses." Nicky, from Formby.

Editors Reply:- "Thanks for your email. Sefton has had problems meeting it's 10 day target response time responding to issues with enquiries and complaints, due to 'operational issues.' But they have an out of hours emergency incident response respond to immediate risks to health and safety, such as:- missing gulley cover, missing manhole cover, carriageway collapse or roadway collision damage. You can access this service via calling Sefton Council on:- 0151 922 6107. We would love to hear your views on this issue about any blocked drains or flooding on roads that are causing you concern. Please email us to:- News24@SouthportReporter.Com or send us a Tweet to @SouthportReport or @FormbyReport "
