Liverpool brings in year 4718

ON 26 January 2020, the Liverpool Chinese Community came out to celebrate the start of 4718, on 24 January 2020. 

This year is better known in the West as the year of the Metal Rat. The Rat is the start of a 12 year cycle that takes in 11 other Zodiac Animals. That meant the celebrations where not complete without a giant Rat, along with the tradionally dragon, lion and unicorn dancers, not forgetting the lucky man and all the other colourful and often noisy entertainment that helps them to bring in the New Year.

Interestingly 2020 has an extra "leap month" making the Chinese calendar every 32 or 33 months! This is done to prevent the lunar calendar from becoming more than ½ a month of sync with the solar calendar, So every 2nd or 3rd Chinese calendar year has 13 months and 383 to 385 days.

Yet again, the public who attended this fantastic annual event also got to experience free cultural shows, look at photographic and art displays and even got a chance to take photographs in a pop up studio! Plus they also had a chance to ample tradionally foods,  along with watching Chinese dance displays! This was put on thanks to the Liverpool Chinatown Photographic Society and Wah Sing Chinese Community Centre.
