The Match

SOUTHPORT began their Unibond premier league campaign in West Yorkshire against Wakefield & Emley. Sporting a new strip they ran out in front of 300 traveling fans basking in the sunshine.

There were five new faces in the line-up including recently signed Peter Wright from neighbors Burscough.

Soley's glancing header early in the game almost opened the scoring but Wakefield's keeper saved well. Over zealous refereeing prevented a smooth flowing first half, four players being booked, two a piece, and there were numerous stoppages for free kicks.

Peter Wright's header in the 39th minute was acrobatically palmed over the bar, Lee Ashcroft following up the corner failing to find the target.

Southport were still struggling to penetrate a resolute Wakefield defense but the introduction of Peter Thomson for Lee Mulvaney sparked the Sandgrouders into a higher gear.

On 62 minutes Peter Wright in the box turned to find skipper Steve Soley on the left who fired a low crisp shot into the net to make it 1-0 to the Port.

Both manager and players applauded the traveling support at the end of the game as Southport left the field with 3 points in the bag to kick-start their season.
