SOUTHPORT MOURNS AFTER AMERICAN TRAGEDY
Southport paid its respects to the victims of the tragedy
in America earlier this week by flocking to many of the churches around the town.
After the shock had subsided, Southport people were left with a deep sadness for those who suffered in the destruction and for their families and were keen to pay
their respects. Merseyside Police lowered the Union Jacks
on their Police Stations, Sefton Council Lowered the Sefton Flag
and Businesses through out Sefton put their company flags and
Union Jacks at health mast.
The attacks in America were particularly highlighted due to the Southport
and Formby people involved in the atrocities. Southport man, Steven Smith, is lucky to
be alive after escaping from the World Trade Center. While working on the
27th floor, Mr. Smith managed to escape the chaos after he witnessed the
first explosion at the other tower. His parents waited in Southport for
news which they eventually received gratefully.
Residents in Southport can now sign a book of condolence at Southport Town Hall which will be sent to
America. As a Council spokesman said, "We have been inundated with calls
from Sefton people who want to express their sorrow at what has happened but
are unsure at how they express their sympathy. The council felt that the
most appropriate course of action was to open books of
condolence".
A reporter for Southport.GB.Com
in New York said; "I am staying with friends in New
York. The city is in shock. I feel helps, and see the frustrations
in the faces of New Yorkers, who are desperate to help, but can
not. Fund raising efforts are every where, as people try
to raise funds and feel that they are contributing to the chaos
that the devastation has coursed. Most people know or have
family or relations who died in the building and it has hit the
city hard."
One of PCBT Photography's contacts in the US,
Larry Davis, said:- "It has been a tough
couple of days, but we will make it through alright.
There are now over 7,000 FBI agents working on the case to
find the terrorists right now! That's a lot of agents - the
largest investigation in the history of our country. When I saw
the National Anthem of the United States being played in London
with hundreds of people standing in support it really hit us how
much encouragement and support has been given from your
County. The UK has always been our great allies and we are pleased to have your support."
(Some messages can be seen on the chat room.)
Everyone at PCBT Photography would like to say that they too are appalled at
the tragedy which took place in America and our hearts go out to all the
families of the victims.
