Liberal Democrats warn Police changes must not weaken Neighbourhood Policing in Southport

SOUTHPORT Liberal Democrats have warned that Government plans to restructure Police Forces must not weaken the Neighbourhood Policing that local communities and businesses rely on.

The Government has announced proposals to reorganise Policing and place greater focus on serious and organised crime. Local Liberal Democrats say any changes must protect the visible local presence that helps tackle everyday crime and maintain confidence in local areas. They also welcomed the additional resources Merseyside Police have put into the dedicated Southport Town Centre Team, which is targeting retail crime and anti social behaviour.

Southport Liberal Democrats said that while the increased focus is making a positive difference locally, shoplifting and retail crime remain concerns for businesses, alongside issues such as:- bike and tool theft.

Councillor Mike Sammon, Liberal Democrat Councillor for Cambridge Ward, said:- "We are fortunate in Southport to have proactive neighbourhood officers and PCSOs who work closely with the community, and the additional Town Centre team has already made a positive difference. AsPolicing changes nationally, it is important that the neighbourhood teams residents rely on are protected and strengthened."

Councillor John Pugh, Leader of the Liberal Democrat Group on Sefton Council, said:- "Shoplifting and retail crime have a direct impact on Southport businesses and on confidence in our Town Centre. The extra focus on Town Centre Policing is welcome, but it is vital that any national changes protect these resources and the visible local presence that traders and visitors value."

New jewellery workshop to open in Southport creating bespoke jewellery and making repairs in an hour

A brand new jewellery workshop will soon be unveiled on:- Lord Street, in Southport's Town Center. The family run business, backed by many years of experience, will launch an exciting new concept carrying out all jewellery repairs as well as watch repairs. It will offer the ability to carry out most repairs and services on-site by a team of skilled craftspeople within just an hour.  They are specialists in melting customers' gold and making beautiful bespoke pieces, including:- wedding rings, engagement rings and more.  People will be able to have their watches repaired, as well as buying new watch batteries or watch straps, or having watch links fitted or shortened while you wait.  It includes watch servicing on luxury Swiss watches, with brands including:- AP,  Omega, Tag Heuer, Breitling, Cartier etc.  The new venture will be open 7 days a week, bringing further vitality to Lord Street, which has seen a series of new businesses opening in recent months.  Building work is already taking place at:- 321 Lord Street, in the unit previously occupied by Lapel Menswear, which recently moved into nearby Wayfarers Arcade.  The transformation is being carried out by:- Nicholas Interiors Ltd, a local business based in Crosby.

The owners of the new jewellery workshop said:- "We are very excited to be bringing a brand new concept to the heart of Lord Street. With most jewellery repairs, people have to wait 3 days or more until they get their jewellery back, often the pieces are sent away somewhere else to be done. We want to offer a fast, efficient service on-site within just1hour by our skilled team. We offer a full CAD design service with bespoke jewellery making. If you have some old jewellery and you'd like to create something new, special and meaningful from it, then we can work closely with you to do that. We are pleased to see Lapel Menswear, 1 of the longest established businesses on Lord Street, now operating successfully from Wayfarers Arcade. As soon as their unit on Lord Street became available we reacted to the opportunity immediately. It's in the perfect location on the iconic Lord Street boulevard, which is seeing a real resurgence with some exciting new events along with investment into the Town Hall Gardens, The Garrick and a number of new businesses. We have a provisional opening date for our jewellery workshop for mid April 2026, and would love to be open shortly after Easter. In the weeks ahead we will look forward to sharing more information with everyone about what we offer, about the name of our business, and our exact opening date. Watch this space!"
