Southport's Lightport 2026 - Part 1

SOUTHPORT was bathed in a spectacular glow over the weekend as huge crowds gathered for the inaugural Lightport event between:- 14 February and 16 February 2026. Despite some challenging weather conditions which impacted the final night, the atmosphere remained vibrant as visitors braved the elements to witness the Town’s iconic Lord Street transformed into a 400 metre walk through rainbow of colour and creativity.

As the 1st major milestone of the Southport 2026 programme, Lightport served as a dazzling introduction to a year long celebration of the town’s elegantly eccentric character. The free immersive experience utilised cutting edge lighting technology and immersive audio to guide spectators through 4 distinct zones. The journey began at Mermaid Gardens and culminated at the Town Hall, turning the historic boulevard into a high tech sound and light installation that captivated residents and tourists alike during the February half-term break.

While Lightport has set a high bar for the cultural calendar, it is merely the beginning of an ambitious year for the seaside resort. In April, the town will host an even more surreal spectacle when the renowned French street theatre company, Transe Express, brings Cristal Palace to Lord Street. This upcoming event will feature a massive 15 metre chandelier, suspended above the boulevard, effectively turning the area into an open air ballroom populated by aerial dancers. These new additions to the Town’s schedule complement long standing local traditions such as:- the Ainsdale Flower Show, the Southport Flower Show, the Southport Air Show, and the British Musical Fireworks Championships. Plus we also have the Open Golf hading to Royal Birkdale later this year!

Please note we have full coverage with amazing interviews and photos in next weeks edition, as this is just a taste of what is still to be published... Sorry, but good things only come if you wait.. On a serous note, this was in our view an outstanding event, and we really want to show all those who did not attuned just how good it was. Everyone was friendly, from the Police and Paramount Security, to those visiting the show. Also the crew where amazing throughout and worked to help businesses within the cornered off zones to help them to continue to operate throughout the event.

Organisers are keen to hear from those who attended the festivities over the last three nights as they look toward the rest of the 2026 season. Members of the public are encouraged to share their thoughts and photographs with the newsroom by emailing News24@SouthportReporter.Com  or by reaching out via the publication’s social media channels on:- Mastodon, Facebook, or X (Twitter). Further details regarding the upcoming spring and summer programme can be found on the Visit Southport website and through regular local news feeds.
