Maghull U3A Visit to Lydiate Abbey and Scotch Piper

ON 2 March 2026, despite abysmal weather, members of U3A lead by George Birchall met at the Scotch Piper, Lydiate, next to ruins, inaccurately referred to as Lydiate Abbey. The start also had a cheque presentation.  This edifice and indeed the Scotch Piper Pub are significant places in local history and heritage. Both are Grade 2 Listed properties. We heard from David Russell who lead the group and gave us the information, that the friends of Lydiate Abbey are actively trying to raise funds in order to carry out maintenance and upgrade the site.

Lydiate Abbey was, in truth, a Chapel attached to Lydiate Hall, which has not survived, and is one of only 3 within the County. Written records are on hand from the 15th Century, when the Ireland Family were Lords of the Manor, but the site was probably of significance well before that. Lawrence Ireland dedicated the Chapel to his wife Catherine, so subsequently, St Catherine's Church. The Scotch Piper similarly has been of importance to the community for hundreds of years. The Inn is Cruck Frame structure from 3 split tree beams, a small part of which can still be seen within the bar. But, the inn has seen many changes and including names over the years. It is probably the oldest Inn within the area. We were also informed that every farm had its own brewery in the middle ages.

Under the awning provided by the Scotch Piper, there were photos and literature, alongside artefacts, but the foul weather deterred much perusal. After the information was delivered the group was privileged to hear a talk given by an Ex Mayor of Magull, Ken Hughes, who is a qualified and very experienced stonemason, who has worked on many historical buildings, including:- Fountain's Abbey, and Liverpool Cathedral. He talked animatedly about his apprenticeship and methods of learning his art. He also demonstrative his skills carving a sandstone block. His talk and demonstration were both informative and amusing. He even allowed attendees the chance to have a go at carving a block of stone, which only highlighted just how much skill is required to make any impact! It must be inspiring to realise that the work you have completed and bears your mark (every stone mason has his own individual mark) will probably survive for hundreds, maybe thousands of years.

Before and after the talk and demonstration, U3A were able to enjoy the warmth, comfort and victuals of the Inn. U3A's George Birchall said:- "Caroline and her staff offered excellent hospitality and we all enjoyed tea, coffee, hot chocolate, wine or beer."

Both the Abbey and the Pub are well worth a visit! If your in Maghull area pop in to see the Liver Music nights, on the 1st Friday and Saturday, of every month, from 8 pm. It is also worth adding that the Pub is hosting the 5th Rock 'n' Roll Extrava Ganxa on Saturday, 18 July 2026.
