Major LED Street Lighting Upgrade Programme completed in Knowsley

KNOWSLEY Council has successfully completed 1 of its largest street lighting improvement programmes in recent years, replacing more than:- 18,000 street lights with modern, energy efficient LED technology in partnership with infrastructure services provider Enerveo.

The programme has upgraded lighting infrastructure in every ward across the borough. Alongside street lighting replacements, the project included upgrades to high mast lighting on the:- M62 motorway, subway lighting and illuminated traffic signs, delivering improvements across the borough's public lighting network.

The ambitious programme commenced in July 2022 in the Northwood ward in Kirkby and has been delivered in carefully planned phases to minimise disruption to residents and road users. The final lantern replacement was recently completed at Market Place in Prescot Town Centre, marking the successful conclusion of a project that has transformed lighting across Knowsley.

The upgraded LED lighting will deliver significant environmental and financial benefits. They are considerably more energy efficient than the traditional lighting they replace and are expected to reduce electricity consumption by approximately 2.94 million kWh each year which is the equivalent to powering 800 average homes and 385 tonnes of CO, which equates to taking 84 average cars off the road each year.

This reduction in energy use will make an important contribution towards Knowsley Council's commitment to becoming carbon neutral by 2040.

Alongside the environmental benefits, the technology offers enhanced reliability and lower maintenance requirements, helping to reduce operational costs.

The new lighting also provides improved visibility and lighting performance across the borough's streets, helping to create safer and more welcoming public spaces for residents, visitors and businesses.

Cllr Tony Brennan, Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Economic Development, said:- "It's been great to work in partnership with Enerveo to complete our ambitious and transformative street lighting programme, which will benefit our residents, road users, cyclists and pedestrians alike."

Cllr Shelley Powell, Cabinet Member for Communities and Neighbourhoods, said:- "Programmes like this are vital if we are to achieve our ambitious target of reducing emissions from our own buildings and services to net zero by 2040. The programme has also delivered other benefits too including lighter and brighter streets, helping to promote feelings of safety."

John Bate, Operations Manager at Enerveo, added:- "Completing the Knowsley LED upgrade programme is a major milestone that reflects the strong partnership between Enerveo and Knowsley Council. We are proud to have upgraded more than 18,000 street lights, along with high-mast, subway and signage lighting, creating a more efficient, reliable and sustainable network across the borough. The programme will cut annual energy use by almost 3 million kWh, reduce maintenance needs and support the Council's ambition to become carbon neutral by 2040, delivering lasting financial and environmental value for residents.

60 years of love, laughter and a little Liverpool vs Everton rivalry

A Merseyside couple celebrating 6 decades of marriage have marked their remarkable 60th Wedding Anniversary while being cared for at St Joseph's Hospice in Thornton.

Pat and Dave Hughes have been married for 60 years, building a life together filled with family, music, laughter and, perhaps inevitably, the occasional disagreement.

1 subject in particular has remained a source of friendly rivalry throughout their marriage; football.

Pat said:- "We agree on lots of things and we do lots of things together, and there are lots of things we disagree on – and that's fine. 1 thing we disagree on is Liverpool and Everton. On derby day, I say we must win, so of course he wants to win! That's 1 day we are never in agreement."

For Pat, the secret to their long marriage is simple:- despite having very different personalities, they have always complemented each other.

Pat laughed:- "I'm the 1 who is always organising things and doing things, and Dave is the 1 who… well, we've always worked things out. We've just got different personalities, but they gelled together. I think that's probably why it's lasted so long."

Music has also played a huge part in their lives together, with both sharing a particular love of the music of the 1960s.

Pat joked:- "We both love music, especially 60s music. We love jiving and twisting; although Dave doesn't twist me, he makes sure somebody else does that!"

Their shared love of singing has also given them plenty in common. Dave was a member of the Liverpool Male Voice Choir, while Pat is a member of a local singing choir.

"I did have a fantastic voice," Dave joked.

The couple's 60th anniversary has been made even more special by a very personal message from Their Majesties King Charles III and Queen Camilla, who sent Pat and Dave a special anniversary card to mark their 6 decades of marriage.

And there is certainly no shortage of family to celebrate with. Pat and Dave have 3 children, 8 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren; including a new arrival recently.

As they marked their special day at St Joseph's Hospice, Pat and Dave were keen to share their appreciation for the care and kindness they have received.

Pat said:- "Every member of staff has congratulated us, and the way they've been looking after us today has been amazing. They haven't just looked after Dave, they've looked after me as well. The hospice is just awesome. And, of course, the beautiful grounds mean we can get out and walk around and take Dave out in his wheelchair. Although the wheel fell off yesterday, which gave me a bit of excitement!"

For the team at St Joseph's Hospice, being able to share such a special milestone with Pat and Dave has been a privilege.

After 60 years together, their story is a wonderful reminder that a long marriage is built on shared experiences, knowing when to compromise, having a good laugh; and accepting that some things, like football, will never be agreed upon.

Everyone at St Joseph's Hospice would like to wish Pat and Dave a very happy 60th Wedding Anniversary; and many more happy memories together.

Sadly, Dave passed away a few days later.  Our thoughts go out to Pat and her family.  Pat is well know to many for running Miss Liverpool and Miss Liverpool City Region contests, as well as her many other charity commitments.

Pat has since added:- "I would like to thank the Hospice and its staff for making this very special occasion happen. They looked after us amazingly well and offered outstanding care to my husband throughout. Please do support them by donating to them. More information about the work they do can be found online at:- StJHospice.Org.UK."
