Empowering Youth Foundation proves golf is accessible to children of all abilities

OVER 80 primary school children from across Liverpool took part in a golf competition as part of the key stage 2 school games. The event was hosted by children's charity Empowering Youth Foundation (EYF) and the Liverpool School Sports Partnership (LSSP) at Croxteth Hall on Thursday, 18 June 2015.  The competition was structured around EYF's programme, which is designed to result in community cohesion and development of a transferable skill set for young people. To date, pupils have participated in games such as football, netball, volleyball, dance and much more. This week it was all about fun, golf based activities. EYF uses this sport to focus on building valuable life skills inherent in the game of golf such as honesty, sportsmanship and courtesy.  Liverpool School Sport Partnership (LSSP) works to achieve the national:- "PE & Sport Strategy for Young People" strategy, which aims to get 5 to 16 year olds to participate in at least 2 hours of high quality curriculum PE and sport at school each week. The partnership also aims to create new opportunities for them to participate in a further 3 hours each week of sporting activity, through school, voluntary and community providers. Through the 'Liverpool School Games', children of all abilities are taught sports related values, as well as being introduced to new sports that they otherwise may not have tried.   Both organisations have similar aims and, as such, have existing ties together in areas such as Manchester. Having recently developed a presence in the Liverpool area, this new partnership was a natural progression for EYF. The charity has grown rapidly in the last 12 months and as well as continuing its work in Wrexham and Manchester, it is now having a positive effect within the communities of Liverpool and Staffordshire.

Commented Molly Whelan, charity development manager at Empowering Youth Foundation:- "We are thrilled to have been able to establish this new relationship with Liverpool School Sports Partnership, enabling us to host one of the key competition days. It has been an honour to watch children of all abilities benefit positively from our way of coaching and as always, it's great to see children play and have fun in a safe, friendly environment."
