The Orange Lodge 12 July Parade - Southport 2017

THE Orange Lodges from all over the North West of England, and even from Scotland, descended on Southport for the annual 12 July Parade.  Over 5,000 marchers took part in the event, that had perfect weather, with a warm wind, blue sky and sun throughout the day.  The event attracted a very heavy Police presence throughout the day, shadowing, both the morning Parade and the return parade in the late afternoon.  Also Police patrol the area, keeping an eye out for problems as supporters and marches packed out the Towns pubs, clubs and bars between the parades. This years event passed off without any major incidents.   Liverpool Provincial Grand Orange Lodge told us that:- "Liverpool has a very large Irish community and this event started as a day out for members, also to keep alive out traditions.  the Parade is held in memory of those who stood up for the principles we support today.  It celebrates the last time 2 crowned kings of England, Scotland and Ireland faced each other on the battlefield. The battle was at the River Boyne in July 1690 and became known as the Battle of the Boyne.  King William III of Orange was victorious over his rival King James II and secured the Protestant ascendancy for generations to come in Northern Ireland."  Please let us know your views on how this event went via emailing us to:- News24@SouthportReporter.Com.
