Southport fundraisers donate a huge ₤25k to life saving cancer research

THE Southport based fundraising committee for local charity North West Cancer Research has raised a staggering ₤25,000 this year alone. Throughout 2017 the Southport team has hosted a range of incredibly successful events, including a:- 'Call my Bluff' themed wine and cheese evening, with generous guests doubled the amount of money raised in previous years. Other events in the extensive Southport fundraising calendar were an afternoon tea with award winning Cilla Black tribute artist, a sell out Chinese banquet and the popular Summer Sparkle afternoon. 1 of the fundraisers from Southport even inspired her 13 year old granddaughter to arrange her 1st ever and very successful charity cake sale, contributing to this total and inspiring a younger generation of fundraisers. A number of these events have been kindly match funded by Barclaycard's fundraising team which has continually supported the charity and contributed ₤5,500 to the final total this year. All the money raised by the Southport committee will be donated to North West Cancer Research, to fund life saving cancer research across the region, including at nearby University of Liverpool. Money generated by the Southport fundraising committee has already helped progress research projects looking at cancers with a greater prevalence in the North West including skin cancer, bladder cancer and pancreatic cancer.

Olive Cutts, chair of the Southport Committee, said:- "On behalf of everyone on the Southport fundraising committee I would like to thank all those who have supported our events this year. Your generosity has allowed us to donate such a fantastic amount of money to support cancer research which is happening on our doorstep. We look forward to seeing everyone at both our new and returning events next year and for another great year of fundraising in 2018."

North West Cancer Research has committed to funding more than ₤13million worth of cancer research over the next 5 years, including ₤1million towards sustaining research based at the North West Cancer Research Centre, at the University of Liverpool until 2021.

Alastair Richards, CEO of North West Cancer Research, said:- "North West Cancer Research has fundraising groups all over the North West and these groups are invaluable in helping our charity continue to fund life saving cancer research. Cancer is one of the biggest killers in our region. Thanks to research backed by our dedicated fundraisers, ˝ of all people diagnosed with cancer today will survive. It is our aim to maintain a constant flow of research funding over the lifetime of the charity to ensure that in the future everyone diagnosed with cancer will have a better chance to survive."
