Under 9 Jim Rourke Trophy

A tremendous cup quarter final encounter was played at Deansgate Lane between two talented teams, whose sole objectives was to play great football.

Following an earlier 1-1 draw in the league, this was again a very close encounter with Formby edging a thrilling first half following a thunderous 20 yard drive by Joe Johnson in the bottom corner after great work down the left by Ben Williams and Dan Griffin. Formby had at least half a dozen corners in the first half that Town Green`s keeper and defense coped with admirably.

As expected Town Green upped the tempo in the second half and great goalkeeping by Toby Gladwin kept Formby in front. Then a great move from defence involving Nick Abbott, Jack Lemmens and Elliott Cooper set up Joe Blanchard whose shot from the edge of the box nearly broke the crossbar, the ball tantalising dropped on the line and Joe Johnson was like a young Usain Bolt as he pounced and scored his and Formby JSC White's second goal.

Town Green put more pressure onto Formby's defence and with 10 minutes to go pulled a goal back.

At the other end another corner to Formby saw Joe Blanchard rise like Dixie Dean only for the giant Town Green keeper to pull off another great save. The last five minutes saw everybody giving 200% with Formby`s Kieran Hall covering every blade of grass. Formby finally edging the game 2 - 1.

Once again football was the winner here, as the very high standard of football teams in this Under 9 Leopards Division of the Craven Minor Leopards Divion is exceptional. Both teams were a credit to their respective clubs.
