Armed Forces Day events Southport
Photograph by Patrick Trollope.

SOUTHPORT held its annual Armed Forces Day on Saturday, 29 June 2013, in Princes Park. The highlight being a Spitfire doing a fly past. Despite the odd weather, the event was extremely well received, with lots of activities for young and old to enjoy. The event had many forces' charities and associations holding stalls on the show ground, raising cash and awareness along the way. Also on offer was a funfair, paintball stands, recruiting teams and arena displays along with a collection of military vehicles and fire engines. The event was organised by Steve Hawkshaw who told us:- "I feel strongly about supporting our troops, both at home and away on operations and as a veteran myself, I hope events like this help raise awareness of them. Events like this help to show the public's support and boost the troops' morale along the way, allowing the public to find out what the troops do and have done. The servicemen and women, if asked, do not see themselves as heroes, but it really does give you a great sense of pride when the public stand up and get behind them. I would like to thank all of you who attended the events we put on this year and in the past, as it really does have an impact, not only in the form of fund raising."

On Sunday, Southport also held the annual Armed Forces Day parade, with a service at the town's war memorial. Attending this service were Dame Lorna Muirhead, the Lord Lieutenant of Merseyside, and other VIP's including Southport's MP John Pugh, and the Duke of Lancaster's band. to see more photographs taken by us at this event, please click on here!
