Je Suis Charlie I Am Charlie
Stephen Twigg MP visits the Cystic Fibrosis Trust

STEPHEN Twigg MP for Liverpool West Derby has joined national charity, the Cystic Fibrosis Trust, on 9 January 2014, to hear about the work of the Liverpool adult Cystic Fibrosis Unit based at Liverpool Heart and Chest.

As well as visiting the Amanda unit, the MP also heard from staff and patients about developments in the last few years that have had a positive impact on the lives of people living locally with cystic fibrosis.

The median life expectancy for someone born with CF is just 36 years old. As more people enter adult care, there is a significant need to develop new adult services across the UK to care for them. A rise in the adult population across the UK has meant that there is a growing need for the expansion of specialised CF centres, particularly in the North West region.

There are currently around 300 adult patients who access the regional CF centre and all inpatient and outpatient activities are routinely segregated avoiding all contact with other people with cystic fibrosis to help avoid potentially fatal infections being passed from one CF patient to another. The majority of people with CF are advised to carry this segregation into their daily lives.

Stephen Twigg MP said:- "I was delighted to be invited to visit the Adult Cystic Fibrosis unit to hear about the specialist care that is provided here in Liverpool. I applaud the hard work of those working so tirelessly to care for adults with this serious condition."

Cystic Fibrosis affects nearly 10,000 people in the UK but, outside of its own community, it is a poorly understood condition. The disease is caused by a genetic defect and is a lifelong progressive and debilitating illness which affects the lungs and digestive system.

The condition means a relentless regime of daily medications and therapies help to manage symptoms. As lung damage progresses most people with the condition will require a lung transplant to help prolong life expectancy.

Earlier this year the Cystic Fibrosis Trust launched the Hope for More campaign calling for improvements to lung transplantation services in England.
