Merchant Navy Day
8th September 2002

Liverpool Coastguard is commemorating Merchant Navy Day by hosting an open day on Sunday 8th September 2002, at Crosby between 1100 and 1600. It will be the first time the station opens to the public since the major refurbishment and extension which saw the addition of a new Operations Room and the integration of our colleagues from the Marine Survey and Inspection branch.

The local lifeboats, both RNLI and independent, will be on exercise off the promenade over the high water period (high water 1300BST) while a Coastguard boat, vehicles and coast rescue equipment will be on show in the MRSC grounds with local Auxiliary Coastguards and staff from MRSC’s Liverpool and Holyhead on hand to answer any questions or to offer advice.

The Merchant Navy Training Board and local shipping companies will have displays along with other organisations who all play a vital role in the maritime community:- SARDA (Search and Rescue Dogs Association), King George’s Fund for Sailors, the RNLI, the Lairdside Maritime Centre, Mersey Mission to Seafarers, Sefton beach lifeguards, the North West Recompression Unit and the other emergency services.

The day promises to be a huge success and a valuable opportunity for us to meet with the local public and visitors to the area and for them to get to know the people supporting their local maritime community. "We want to encourage people to visit and enjoy the coast and by offering safety advice at an event such as this, we would hope to prevent some of the many unnecessary accidents which happen on the coast and at sea." Said the MCA.
