A groundbreaking yacht promoting Liverpool as European Capital of Culture in 2008 was unveiled today to officially launch a new round the world race fleet.
The 68-foot boat, sponsored by Liverpool City Council, has been built to compete in the 35,000 mile Clipper 05-06 Race, which sets sail from Liverpool on 18, September 2005.
Designed by Dubois Naval Architects, one of the World's foremost yacht design houses, and built by Shanghai Double Happiness Yachts in China, the new yacht is one of a ten-strong fleet to be raced by international teams of seventeen crew and a skipper.
The fleet of ten identical yachts, termed Dubois 68s and all built from a single mould will provide their crews with the fastest round the world ocean racers in the non-professional field.
Chairman of Clipper Ventures plc Sir Robin Knox Johnston said:- "This is another significant step for Clipper Ventures and an important date in the Clipper 05-06 Race calendar.
Liverpool '08 is a credit to both the Dubois design team and the successful build team at Shanghai Double Happiness Yachts.
The Clipper shore team will race her around the World, and are extremely excited about putting Liverpool '08 through her paces on the water."
