North West Search For A Star 2008

THE British Resorts & Destinations Association Search For A Star North West Area Final took place on Thursday, 18 September 2008 at the Southport Arts Center.

All the cast at this years event where very well received by the judges and audicance alike.  This year was one of the hardest years to date, as very little differences where shown between all the acts.  All of them put on a very strong performance and all won over the harts of the audience, so it was very sad to have to see just on act get through to represent the North West in this years National Final, that will be held in Margate on 22 November 2008.  This years winning act from the North West Search For A Star will not only represent Southport and the North West, but also Liverpool, a major honor as the city is Capital Of Culture this year! Back stage was electric through out the night, with good humor though out.  What surprised me most was their was not allot of nerves showing and all the acts helped and supported each other.  Most years their is one or two shy acts who do not mix, but this was not the case this year.  Starting the night was Susanne Morris, a veteran of this event and a very strong competitor.  Next were Amy Shelton and then Scott Chapman.  They where followed by Kim Howlett, Simbhan McNally and Nic Donnelly, with the last tow acts of the first half being Gina Harrison and David Ashley.  All of them put on a fantastic display of vocal talent and as each one took to the stage, the bar was raised higher and higher.  By the second half it was hard to guess what was going to happen.  So tight where the marks.  Starting the second half was Callum Simmon swiftly followed by Jodie Hamblet.  Jodie was the liveliest act, running around the stage and at one point diving behind the band.  Then came Kortni Turner followed by Carly J Kelly.  Carly who traveled the farthest to sing on the night gave a tremendous performance and looked stunning...  by now all the acts personalities and styles where beginning to come through.  Last up was Dickie Wood who ended the competitive acts.  The judges had a huge task on their hands to find the winner.  This amazing night was well worth watching and I can see many of the nights acts being big names, if they can hold in their, ever as pop stars or as theater stars.  After a long session by a guest star and the band, the judge’s results came in.  Un-surprisingly the time seemed to wiz by for many of the acts at this point.  The side of the stage suddenly became very quiet as the results where read out.  Coming third was Nick Donnelly; in second place was Kortni Turner.  Both of them are very strong acts and I think I can safely say we will see more of these two very soon!  Then the tension back stage became intense, and the winners name was announced.

The winner was Jodie Hamblet.  At first she did not realize it was her, but all around her the acts where congratulating her.  She was in total shock.  She was moved on stage by the other acts and she suddenly snapped back in to gear...  It was a fantastic site to see the support of the other acts and that no mallis was shown towards her.  After she had got her breath back, she was asked to perforce the last number of the night.  As the stage lights dimmed, we moved here to one side and got a very quick sound bite off her.  You can hear for your self how stunned she was.  As se left the back stage she it was electric, with her over the top, but friendly and bouncy personality taking over as she was greeted her family.

Well done Jodie!  Good luck to you in the National's, do us prowled!  As for the others, I hope to see you in next years event, as you where all stars and I think as I said before, many of you will go far......
