Photograph given by Merseyside Police.

FOLLOWING an incident in the early hours of Sunday 14 November in which David Vaughan, 22, from Churchtown, received serious head injuries and died on during the morning of Wednesday 24 November, Merseyside Police have opened a murder investigation.

David Vaughan was taken by ambulance to Walton Hospital after the incident that on West Street near to the entrance to the Health Club of the Royal Clifton Hotel. Detectives say the victim was assaulted, and fell to the floor. They believe that the assault may have occurred when the victim went to the aid of his girlfriend, who is thought to have been involved in a fight with another girl.

Detective Inspector Tim Keelan, explained:- "We believe that the victim's girlfriend may have been involved in a fight with another girl and that during the fight a number of other people started to attack the girlfriend. We believe it was at this stage that the victim went to help his girlfriend and was assaulted.

We know there were a lot of people in the West Street area and I would appeal to anyone with information to come forward and help us with our inquiries. I would ask anyone who was in West Street between 1.30am and 2.30am, who may have seen two girls involved in a fight, or who may have any information which could help us with our inquiries to contact us."

Detectives are continuing to look through CCTV footage from the time of the assault and anyone with information is asked to contact them on 0151 777 3455 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.

A woman and four men arrested in connection with an assault on David Vaughan and have been bailed by police, pending further inquiries.
