The 2010 - 24 Hour Yacht Race

THIS year’s 24 Hour Race on Southport Marine Lake, over 11 September to 12 September 2010 was a huge success. Even though there were a few boats less than last year, this race brought in teams from all over the world once again, including a team made up from the Olympic training team, Team GB - Going For Gold. That team was the 470 Class Assoc. and they came in first place by completing 112 laps, with second place going to South Staffordshire S.C. who did 108 laps. The first place Lark was South Staffordshire S.C. B also with 108 laps, but over all they came in 3rd place. The first place for the Enterprises was Sole Sailor Racing Assoc. completing a staggering 105 laps over the 24 hours and over all coming in at 8th place. Even though the race is sailed on what West Lancashire yacht club describes as "relatively safe waters", it does not make the sailing any easier. This year, the race was affected by extremely changeable weather conditions, from rain to sun and high winds, making even the slightest mistake problematic. Quite a few boats capsized and had to be rescued over the night, making this race once of the most taxing in recent years for the crews. "It was hard going and we all made mistakes on the water, and some of us off the water as well." one of the teams who had just finished joked.  To see the full results of the race and to find out more about it, or even to enter a team and possibly compete with Olympic teams, click on to the WLYC website.   Please enjoy our first photographic report of the 2010 race by clicking on here now.
