Southport and surroundings power outage...

MUCH of Merseyside was blacked out over Wednesday night as 16000+ customers lost their supply from 9:08pm approx. to midnight approx for most affected, but some customers power did not come on until 1:30am Thursday. Lots of businesses that operate at night were severely affected. Southern Fried Chicken on Nevil Street, Southport said, "It was horrible. We lost the best time for trade and that has affected our weeks takings drastically."

Provider Scottish Power UK plc. Media Relations Manager Anne Benson said:- "We apologise to customers for the inconvenience. This was an unusual situation to have two faults simultaneously on this part of the network. We got engineers out as quickly as possible to get customer's supplies restored as fast as possible."

David Sidebottom, Regional Director of energywatch, said:- "Whilst it's true, there can never be real compensation for a miserable night without power, it can help replace things that are lost such as food in a fridge, but unfortunately as the power outage was not over 18 hours their can not be any climes made using the compensation system. The compensation payments are formally known as 'Guaranteed Standards'. They have been agreed between the industry and Ofgem to provide a common level of service to all consumers and to give companies an incentive to improve their performance. Only in the most exceptional circumstances can Distributors be exempt from these standards or like in this case the outage was under 18 hours."

Sidebottom urged consumers to contact energywatch on 0845 9 06 07 08 for free advice and information on this issue.
