Issue:- 13 March 2014

Formby is all a Twitter!

MANY businesses in Formby are under increasing pressure and have turned to Twitter to voice their views, with an aim of promoting themselves and tackling the issues they face. Mike Widman, who owns Formby Car Electrical, started the #FormbyHour @ShopLocalFormby group on Twitter after spotting other places in Sefton had their areas’ hour on Twitter. This initiative is designed to help the community to pull together and to build up small traders’ voices into one that will be listened to. The group now has local shop keepers, small chain groups and some high profile businesses, like Formby Golf Club, now backing it. One of the other members supporting them is MP, Bill Esterson, who was at the official launch of the Formby hour, which took place on Saturday, 8 March 2014. Formby, as we have reported in the past, has increasingly been witnessing many local businesses closing, with many owners blaming it on a lack of support from the local community, and on increasing pressures from multinationals, like Waitrose and Tesco, who as many have said, are now dominating trade in the village. Other major issues are London based landlords pushing rents up and up, along with a very strong feeling that Sefton Council has neglected to help businesses. So please support this drive to help save Formby Village from losing all its local traders. Join the tweets and help spread the word that:- “The village is open for business!” This video footage is of 3 of the members who launched:- ‘Formby Hour,’ giving you an idea of what you might hear if you follow #FormbyHour, which will run between 7pm to 8pm, every Tuesday.
